Not idling properly

  1. #1
    Hi people

I have a 1999 vts with a few mods and im having a bit of trouble with it. Just wondering if anyone has any ideas for me to try.

When i start it up in the mornings it runs really lumpy and will cut out unless i keep the revs up slightly. When its warm it will idle completely fine albeit sometimes a little high (1000rpm most of the time but sometimes 1400rpm?!?)
I could turn it down a bit but then im thinking that would make it even worse when cold.

The engine mods on it are:
    head skimmed, ported and polished
    bigger valves,seats and springs
    motorsport cams and ecu
decat with piper back box and 4-2-1 manifold
    forced air induction kit
    techniclutch fast road clutch kit
B&M short shift and steel gear linkage

Wonder if any of these would be causing the problem?

Ive cleaned the throttle body thoroughly with some carb cleaner but that doesnt seemed to have done the trick so any help would be appreciated

Oh and im also going to get some pictures up soon and list all other mods

what do you mean by this and what cams and make of ecu?
and techniclutch have a really bad reputation of being shit and falling apart in your gear box so watch how you go with it..

Depending on what cam`s you`ve got fitted ie a wild cam then the ecu has to be properly mapped to suit the cam`s whic may be the reason for your idling probs.

I'd love to say I built it myself and know exactly whats been done to it but unfortunately I dont. It was just a cheapish one I found on ebay and the bloke didnt tell me much about it. I have receipt for the work done but even on there all it says is "motorsport cams and ecu" you could prob take a look still if you type "260742398525" into ebay. Maybe you will read more into that i can. Thanks for replies

If you have the invoice it should tell you what cams were fitted and the ecu used. Chances are the cam's are too wild and the ECU is mapped wrong or badly if mapped at all giving you a bad idle.
if all that it says is motorsport cam and ecu on the invoice there is something wrong somewhere as most places keep on record what they have fitted incase the car is returned.

my guess is the car runs fine at about 1250 rpm?

ill have another read through the invoice and double check. its completely fine when its warm apart from sometimes it will idle at 1000rpm and sometimes at 1400. its mainly when its cold its a problem. like i say though ill have a look through the invoice again soon and ill update. cheers

could even be your idle control valve that needs cleaning or replacing there is a guide on here somewhere.

if its not a really lumpy idle i cant see it being your cams though.

worth finding out what ecu you have and also the cams for future reference.
