Morning All.
I thought I'd post what I found the above problems to be as it may proove useful for some people.
Firstly, in a morning getting into first gear was like trying to push a car with the handbrake on and the gear changes were generally stiff. Turned out some dopy git who owned this previously had been filling the gear box up from the top and not the level plug. When it was drained about 5 - 6 litres of oil came out, theres only supposed to be 2 !!. Also explains the massive amount of oil deposits on my gearbox. So a change of oil sorted my gear box out and now gear changes are nice and smooth.
Secondly, I was getting a knocking noise from the front right when going round tight turns while accellerating. Was a CV joint causing the problem so had the driveshaft replaced, picture below shows the old driveshaft. The joint was knackered was making grinding noises if you turned it round.

Hope this proves helpful to some people.
