Tapping like mad!!!

  1. #1
    Hi people

My VTS has developed an extremely loud tapping noise from the engine, it's quite loud. It's only an 03 plate and has full service history. I did the LSAT service myself and that was only 2weeks ago!

    Could it be the tappets?

Aren't the tappets on a VTS self adjusting?

    What else could it be?

    Cheers

check your spark plugs are tight

the xu10j4rs (gti6) and the tu5j4 are prone to loosening plugs. apparently its down to the different expansion rates between the aluminium heads and the steel plugs?????????? according to my mate anyhow, hes the local master tech at pug so pretty reliable source.............

Hiya guys .. I changed my oil last week on me vtr with vts conversion using mobil1 10 40w , since then i have noticed that when engine is really warm the engine is tapping from under roker cover area !! but when car cools down or driving at low rev range no tapping at all.. ANY IDEAS WHAT THIS CAN BE ??? oil Too thin when at high temp ?? lifters ?? or something worse cheers guys

more than likely tappets aren't helping, why did you use 10w not 5w

Oil being too thin wouldnt be an issue tbh, 10w40 is slightly thicker than 5w30 oil anyway. Maybe you have a hydraulic tappet thats sticking, if thats the case then the noise should go away after the engine is hot, unless the tappet is at fault and need replacing, does it sound like it could be a single tappet at fault or is the tapping rapid even on idle (indicating several tappets at fault)

5w or 10w is the recommended spec oil for the engine though..

To OP have you tried some wynns tappet stuff? I found it to work on a couple of K-series engines in old metro gtis before
