have you re connected the fan
  3. #3
yeah everything is (as far as were sure) connected up again
we've changed the thermostat and fan switch this am, only drained water from rad as per.... and now nothing!?

radiator fan not comming on...Check fuses,if fuses are good, temp sensor or fan motor isnt working correct
  5. #5
Have you bled the air from the system? If it's air locked the thermostat may not see any hot water
  6. #6
    fuses are ok...checked them

everything is as it should be back in but it's just failing to start
the water isn't even hot...it's not going through system

    were thinking pump now

car is put back together proper there is no water moving round the system at all have put water in the tank located on the rad but its not moving, there is no water at the thermostat and all i get is the hiss of air from rad bleed point all hoses are cold, is there a header tank other than the one on the rad??

Water won't move through the rad until the thermostat opens. The thermostat won't open till the thermostat water gets hot. Sounds like you need to pressurise and bleed the engine coolant before you will know what's up with it.

done that got the water through and bled the system as best i can tell there is no air in the system now which is good but what i dont get is the fact that it doesnt matter if the fan is on or off the temp stays the same with the heat on max (so the car is nice and toasty so i know thats working) the temp gauage seems to be on the hot side above half way and sits inbetween the half way and HOT point, is this the normal running temp with saxo's as im new to them????

all i have done is drop the water out of the engine, put a new thermo in, i dont get whay its not working proper......how much difference does it make not using coolant

The fan shouldn't come on till it gets to 3/4 on the gauge. Turn heater blower off and try it again. Sounds fine to me...

    I agree with the boss.

I have a MK2 vts and i always thought my fan was knackered as id never heard it. However the fans just dont come on until the engine is really hot....especially on the mk2 vtr / vts engine.

If i was you id take if for a good run, then leave it ticking over on the drive with the bonnet open so you can hear when it comes on.

Both the saxos I've had have always sat at 3/4 on the guage.

Can't help you at all, just letting you know.

it's sitting at half way point whilst stationary but soon as it's driven even a couple of feet the temp goes high..... no fan kicking in

getting quite stressed with it now
  14. #14
    How high is high?
  15. #15
it seems steady when driving at 3/4's

took it for a spin up the motorway... temp went up to just under the red then went back to 3/4 when coming to a standstill this is the strangest part why would it get hotter when driving along, when natural air flow would be reaching the engine?

Hubby pulled out some orange string like substance from thermostat housing again this am when he took thermo out to put gasket sealant round as there seemed to be a gap which could've been allowing air in thus giving an air pocket???

I can't find the card reader to upload pics at mo, but soon as I do i'll upload them.

How high should the engine be running on a 1.6 8v vtr mk 1??
as these cars are new to us we have no idea?? it's the running temp that's bugging

The normal temp should be at just over 1/2. The fan should kick in at about 3/4 and drop the temp back down to just over 1/2.

You really need to confirm the fan is working, by just allowing the car to idle on your driveway for about 15mins.

If the fan comes on, and youre not happy that the temp is 'too high', maybe you have the wrong temperature thermostat fitted.

The coolant system runs under positive pressure, so if there were any gap, you would see water spraying out. If you dont have a water leak, you shouldnt have a prob.

More info on coolant system can be found here >> http://www.saxperience.com/forum/articles.php?c=126

Thanks mate for your help with this, the fan isn't wired up, it's got the manual switch wired up so we can't let it idle, we have to manually switch the fan on reason for this is the switch onto the heat sensor on the rad had been cut off!

Just wish some people wouldn't touch cars if they have no idea on what they are doing! all this is giving us such a headache lol

My parents are now on their way up from Portsmouth to help
