handbrake problem

  1. #1
a friend of mine has just bought a saxo (on a 51 plate with 52000 miles), we took it for a run out because it hasn't been ran for a while and when we stopped and parked up the handbrake seemed very stiff, and the right rear brake was smoking. its a 1.1 so its got drum brakes .
any ideas what could be wrong?
i don't think the brake was binding on because it rolls freely when out of gear.

being in gear or not, has no effect on the rear wheels...

so, if you jack it up, spin it, wit no hand brake, it spins freely?
    hand brake is stiff?
so when is the rears smoking? . . .

    hows the foot pedal?

all i can think, is rear shoes are sticky/ contaminated. possibly from elaky cylinder. this would casue them to stick to the drum, making the handbrake stiff...

once its starts driving, it free'd them up, and will spin lovely, as they are lubes with brake fluid, till he puts the hand brake on again, allows it to dry, get sticky...and stiff again.

i dont understand, sorry if ive read it wrong, but i dont get it.
