Car sounds like a bird..

Strange one I know, sounds like a bird is chirping lol, its coming from the front left side. Would I be right in saying this may be the wheel bearing?

Also from the right hand side of the car there is a very very loud squeel, almost sounds suspension related. I've had the wheel off and looked but can't see anything obvious. It doesn't happen at certain times, can be on a flat straight road, the noise will start and then stop after a few seconds.

Could it be the alternator as its been whining lately?

    Any help/advice appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Matt

    the alternator belt..

spray a little WD40 on the belt and if it stops you know its that !

    worked for me...

Surely WD40 will make it slip?

Why do you think that? have you checked to make sure theres no movement on it?
i'd start by doing that and im not talking about using half a cans worth..just literally 1 spray

if were talking like a tweeting sound that gets faster the more you apply the throttle then thats definatley the alternator belt

If it's when you hit about 60 then I'd say wheel bearing I had same thing

Does it do it while the car is stationary?

The alternator is on the right hand side of the car so yes one of them is likely to be that. Worth getting your head under the bonnet and revving the engine though to be sure where the sound is coming from.

Does the other one change if you press the clutch? If so it's likely the clutch thrust bearing (which is on the left'ish of the engine bay)

Could be wheel bearing is dry, but usually wheel bearings 'rumble' rather than chirp.

Only does it when stationary, just had a new Valeo clutch fitted. I'm pretty sure its the alternator that needs replacing.

And almost 100% certain the other side is the driveshaft.

    Thanks for the help.

    Chirping is wheel bearing

There's no play in the bearing at all. I think...

Matt probably your driveshaft when we looked the rubber had come off and there was no grease in there, if its stationary has to be alternator.

Didn't think there was any play in mine, still chirped away like a mother bitch

    i had the same thing.

    its the drive shaft.

mine did the same thing, every one told me it was clutch, wheel bearing, alternator, and so on.

turns out my DS was bent.

    go get it checked dude

Driveshaft clicks, could do with another, the chirping must be the wheel bearing. I'll get that looked at soon.

It's the noise coming from the drivers side that worries me more. Going to get a new drive belt and see if that makes any difference.

KrisB might find out what it is Saturday....hopefully!

Yeah that's what I had aswell.

    Clicking driveshaft and chirping bearing

yer, my DS knocks, clicks as i am slowing down to a red light or what ever, so gonna have to get that looked at

but mine was chirping like mad, then when i went over 60 it screamed at me!

turns out the DS was bent. no wheel bearing changed, and now the sound has gone. but i did buy a bearing coz i thought it was that. but still have it for a rainy day!

if yours needs replacing, i have one spare, £10 or something.

i had no play in my wheel bearing but it rumbled its tits off not chirped. however a made of mine had a squeek/chirp and it were the o/s/f drive shaft.
