Starter Motor Wiring?

  1. #1
So I've hit a bit of a snag here with the refitting of my Starter motor, not helped by my hatred of anything and everything electrical! It's definately my kryptonite!

I've got a starter motor - with 3 terminals for O-Ring connectors, the O-Rings are then held on by nuts - 2 13mm ones and one 8mm one basically.

The longest 13mm one is for the battery+ terminal?
The other 13mm is for the wire that comes out of the main loom and goes to the alternator as far as I can see?
And the final 8mm one I'm guessing is for the small blue ignition wire?

All of these go on fine with no problems, but then coming off the starter motor itself there is another wire with an O-Ring connector and I don't know where it's supposed to connect to?

I'm guessing it's an earth for the Starter itself, but I can't remember undoing it (just done a Clutch change). It's a fairly chunky black wire with another O-Ring, but the wire is only 2-3 centimetres long. Any ideas folks? The only thing I can think is that it's meant to Earth onto the gearbox/engine, because it definately won't stretch to anywhere on the chassis.

Muchly obliged for ze help ja.

Edit: While I've got all you auto-electric whizzkids in here, I thought I'd double check, the negative wiring from the battery is supposed to go to the chassis (which I didn't undo so is definately right) and also earth on the Gearbox yeah?

All sorted now folks, in case anyone is searching around in future and has the same problem:

The longest 13mm terminal should have both the Battery Live AND the Black wire that comes from the alternator.

The shorter 13mm terminal should have the very short wire that comes from the starter motor itself.

The small 8mm terminal should have the thin light blue wire that is the ignition feed.
