1998 Saxo 1.1 problem

  1. #1
    I have a problem with my Saxo cutting out. Starts perfectly OK, even after being laid up for 4 months over the winter (2nd car), but after running for about 15/20 mins the engine just cuts out. Sometimes it starts up straight away, sometimes I have to leave it a couple of minutes, then it starts OK. It happened quite regularly last year, need to try and get the the bottom of it now.

    Anyone had similar problems, any suggestions please.

    Many thanks,

    Malcolm.

    Hi mate I've no idea it could be a number of things I found this from an old post some guy had same problem and the response was this

    Could be a lot of things mate ;

    *If it does eventually turn over then stalls itself the icv (idle control valve might need cleaning) petrol usually works best to get all the gunk of it.

    *Try pressing the fuel cut off switch, that red button under the bonnet (on the right hand side if your facing the bonnet)

    *Have you got petrol in it?

    *Check any fuses for blows

    *Alternatly check for a spark, take the coil pack off and just 1 plug out, put the plug ,that you have taken out into the coil pack and earth that plug against the engine. Get someone to turn the car over (only needs to be once) you should see a strong blue spark from the plug, Check all 4 plugs.

    *Get your battery checked.
    Hope this helps

    Thanks for coming back to me Shunter. I have tried all of the obvious things, spark/fuel etc. I think it is now just a case of going and trying all of the sensors/swapping them over with ones that I know are OK. It is definitely running rich, don't know whether to start with the Lambda sensor and work away form there.

    Have you checked the wires that connect to the crank shaft sensor ?
    On mine the engine would cut out when the engine got warm. Allow engine to cool for a few minutes and it would start again. Took ages to find the problem though. The wires become quite brittle due to age, and as they get hot, from the heat of the engine, the wires can seperate which then kills the engine.
    Hope this is of some help.
    Good luck.
