Is this an Mot Failure?

  1. #1
I have a "chunk" of rubber missing out the sidewall of my tyre, about the size of a 2p approx.

I took a car in for an MOT previously with sidewall damage and they failed it.
Yet my mate who used to do MOT's said its not a fail.

Just wanted some advice weather to get it changed or not

The tyres are examined to ensure that there is no fouling with any part of the vehicle.

Notes: Although under-inflation is not in itself a reason for failure, a brake test may be inadvisable because of possible damage, and it may affect headlamp alignment. The condition of the spare tyre is not part of the MOT.

    Wheel condition

    - Damage
    - Distortion
    - Cracks
    - Distorted bead rim
    - Securely attached to the vehicle
    - No wheel nuts or studs missing.
    - An externally fitted spare wheel or spare wheel carrier must not be so insecure that it is likely to fall off.

    From a thread ive read...

Personally I would change it, I think it would depend on the MOT tester.

I am guessing some would fail it and others put it as an advisory, but surely better to just change the tyre to save any hassle.

Yeah i think ill pop down tyre place replace both the fronts. Backs are still fairly good. Off topic, but theres another Modified Midlands Cruise coming up hannah, i believe you have attended one before. But either way theres one next month If u wish to attend

Unsure on the exact 'rules' surrounding tyres in regards to an MOT but in my experience, some testers fail some things and others don't

In all honesty it probably is a fail as the size of a 2p is a decent chunk out of the tyre, meaning you would be more prone to having a blowout on that tyre, technically making the car unroadworthy...therefore an MOT fail

I thought as regards the spare tyre that its not illegal not to have a spare tyre but if you have 1 it must be in a roadworthy condition.

    Steve.
I was told this aswell because if you havent got a spare tyre they cant inspect it to see if its road worthy or not , because my spare was removed to install my dual exit exhaust

Might be worth changing it not only for the MOT but incase it lets go at speed mate.

....+1, just aint worth the risk of more damage, defo worth fixing
  11. #11
I would have thought it be a fail myself, on the basis of increased risk of failure of the tyre.

Cant you just put your spare on for the MOT? thats assuming you have a spare and its not bald
  13. #13
I have a chunk missing out of the side of mine. Didnt fail mot. Might of been cus the tester didn't see or just isn't dangerous. If you are worried that it will fail, take it off, put spare on and leave it at home...

depending on where on the sidewall but iirc any damage to the sidewall is a failure as the sidewall is the strength of the trye. also if cracked on the face then it should pass aslong as the cords don't show.

The sidewall, is also known as the kurbing bead!

You can split, take chunks out or bald a sidewall as much as you like!
Aslong as, the it doesnt swell up, like a egg, or golf ball.
    Or
The canvas of the tyre is exposed.

So unless, there is structule damage, there tyre is perfectly fine.

    Steve.
    Spare doesnt come into it.
Punctures and spares, are not part of the test.
