Best Track Tyres for Saxo IMO! toyo r888's maxsport rb5 anRd Yokohama Ao48

  1. #1
I don't know why I can't post in the track chat forum!!!
I have ran Toyo R888's for a whole year and offer much better grip on my Saxo track car but at silverstone trax ran 205 50 R15 maxsport RB5 on the front and they gripped far better than the toyo Tyres! I also used them at a full trackday at Angelsey and Cadwell but they are to wide and rubbed on my arches! So I am definitely goin to buy the 185/55/15 rb5 as are just £61.11 Inc vat delivered!!! I can't Recomended them high enough and hope this helps other track attendees I am not new to trackdays as have been doing them for 15 years and have tracked my Saxo for nearly 5yrs doing at least 6 trackdays a year!!!

From what I've been told and read on reviews the yoko's are meant to grip better but wear faster than there equivilant Toyo's

I've got some ao48 mediums for this year but haven't tried them out yet as im still using wets due to the damp weather..

I have a408r on front now and grip is similar to r888 but cost more new!! Mine were a bargain got then on ford alloys for £31 of eBay with 3/4mm of tread so a lot of life left buy had to gonto london to gay them! Sold alloys for £21 though so bargain hair paid for fitting

Worked it out and have requested to join how long until I know if have been accepted as my comments should help the discussion on these exact Tyres!!!

Avon acb10's Are another option, very light tyre
  11. #11
Ive got Yoko a048's on mine. I havent had any problems with them - brillant in the dry and not bad on a wet track!!
  12. #12
'RB5's have been superceeded by the 'Tarmac', I believe.

From what i've heard of them, they're supposedly about as good as R888s, but are obviously a hell of a lot cheaper.
  13. #13
i doubt they will last as well as a r888 as they are a moulded slick.

ill be buying a new set of dunlop direzzas to try out this year.
  14. #14
Toyo t1r's aren't bad at all in the dry...for £27 you can't go wrong tbh...

Absolute krap in the wet though!
  15. #15
T1-R's burn up far too fast in the dry
  16. #16
These are what I'll be going for later in the summer.

More or less the same I guess

From personal experience I would rate the a048s slighty better than the r888s, but then it's hard to compare because I ran different suspension set up and chassis set ups with each tyre.

I did the snow day at Brands with them on and almost a full day with them on last month so they aren't too bad. I did use the 50 profile version though.

For budget i don't think you can do better but they are so pants in the rain although if you like fwd 'drifting' they are awesome lol

No still sell rb5 for £61.12 Inc vat delivered my last set lasted longer than r888 and IMO gave better grip!

Only £20 for 15mins tracktime and £15 must book in advance as sells out very fast!!! Also thousands of cars on shows 0-60 runs etc I'm booked on goof to have some other Saxo beating scoobies etc

the direzzas are great. We found the fronts wore quickly on the nose heavy Lupo. If you have not got a smooth throttle control with your turbo setup you might want something a little harder in compound
  22. #22
Can only go off my experience on track with my near 160bhp Saxo edges wore quicker but main tread lasted better! Especially now nearly have price of r888 as toyo have gone to expensive now IMO ok 2nd hand if price right

true, ive used them on a couple of 500kg westfields and im impressed.

ill have to get in contact with a dunlop dealer and see if they do different compounds.
like you say, with my setup and also doing nurburgring laps i dont want something that will go off on me 3/4 of the way round the track.

Good to hear you liked your RB5's.

I was weary of them with them being remoulds, but I thaught sod it, they're cheap enough and when being used for sprinting they're unlikely to overheat and delaminate.
Had 4 of them fitted round my VTR wheels and out of the 4, 3 of them had eggs in the sidewalls

Had them removed and replaced with the Toyo's which were on offer at the time so weren't that much more. Been impressed so far but the prices have gone stupid so will hive the A048 a try next.

What was the wear like on your RB's?

Buy some decent tyre's and if you had a lot of power to put down you would see why theyre crap. Why spend loads of money on suspension making it handle if the tyre's slide.

They're my wet weather tyre's for when I just can't get any heat in the r888s at the rear.

I don't have a lot of power to put down and neither do most people who own saxo's. Just think with my spec and some dry weather and once they are warmed up they really aren't too bad. However i only have experience of t1R's T1S's and proxes 4's and nankangs the latter are as bad as having tyres made from ice!

I have set of four in 185x60x14" of these --no good to me now as car is on large rim size now . approx 6mm of tread depth on all no half sensible offer refused, also have 3 worn acb10 15"
  33. #33
Got the acb10s yesterday to try thanks axsaxoman-GMC look wide before fitting them can anyone tell me difference in mm of these which r 7" wide or 7-22-15 to Toyo which r 195/50-15 as tyre convector don't do it
  34. #34
They're a 195-45-15. Doesn't it say that on the tyre beside the 7-22-15?

Dont inflate them to 30+ psi like a radial tyre.
  35. #35
O my god it does they are 195 45 15s cheers even better acceleration than my 50 profile what pressure would you Recomends then for track only use when cold and hot
  36. #36
I need one more Avon ACB10 in a 195 45 15 as now have 3 cash waiting must have atleast 1.6mm or more preferred!!!
  37. #37
Try high teens to low/mid 20's pressure wise and see how you get on.
  38. #38
When cold?? Will be running a pair of them on either front or bqack open to suggestion as only have thre with either full slicks or r888's whihc would give nearest grip levels to match acb10's??? And whihc way round would you run them??
  39. #39
    Ye cold.

What slicks do you have? Radial or Crossply?

Its not ideal running different tyres like you suggest.
  40. #40
    No idea are bf goodrich
  41. #41
    I think they'll be radials.
  42. #42
So should I put ACB10's or slicks on front!?
  43. #43
just picked up a set of part worn avon cr500 anyone used these before, they are 195/45/15 ,will be trying them on my 172 clio at croft this comming bank holiday monday

  46. #46
bought another pair of avon acb10's cheap of ebay so will be fitting them all round when r888's wear out
  47. #47
Went to Japfest on Saturday and Maxxis were there showing some new tyres they are about to launch...one of them being a road legal track tyre! Extremely similar tread pattern to R888's, the bloke I spoke with said it should be available in more than one compound and retailers will be launching it around £50-60 to get a nice big chunk of the market away from Toyo with the R888! So hopefully we might be able to review these soon!

Heybit off topic but didn't want any fanny hole posting, I just got some ACB and there 215/40/15.

My rims are chronos which are 15 inch and a J6.5. Would the tyres fit ok and safe, or is there going to be a problem?

    cheers
  51. #51
You mean 8-22-15? If so you really want a 8" rim.

You can fit the 7-22-15 on a 6.5" rim but 7" is preferable.

there 8.0/22.0-15. Ah I take them to me local tyre place and see if they will fit them and what they look like.

Avon say they fit from j7-j8.5 i think.
Wish I kept me TD'S they were J7 lol.

thanks and sorry for the digression.
