My vts conversion...........(pics)

  1. #1
Over the last few days me and the brother in law (the brains of the outfit) have been converting my VTR into a VTS so I thought I'd share the memories with you lot and keep the post updated as things progress.

The vts engine was sourced from a local scrappy the car was mashed but the engine was in tact with only 24k on the clock:

Cash was exchanged and we took pretty much everything we could get our hands on including the vts wheels which are soon to be sprayed.

We set about removing the not so pretty vtr engine which wasn't too much hassle apart from the odd rusty nut or bolt:

With the vtr out and hole where the engine once rested you start too wonder if its such a good idea:

The VTS engine and gear box were separated at the scrappy so in out wisdom we decided to drop the engine in through the top and attach the gearbox once the engine was mounted. This proved more time consuming then we thought but our patience finally paid off and the engine was in:

Some of you may notice the lovely shiny manifold? This was a complete nightmare to fit as we used the original studs, which were two long and needed cutting down.

All that remains now is the wiring which is proving quite difficult as there seems to be many differences between the VTR (mk1) & VTS (mk2). We still need to identify what wire does what, if anyone could point us in the direction of a wiring guide that would great.

Were hoping to get it running this weekend so I’ll keep you updated on the success.

(I also have a wide variety of VTR/S engine parts so drop me a PM if your in need of anything)

    Regards

    Steve

It's always good to see when it comes these types of larger scale mods.
I dont know about the wiring issue. but good luck man, its looking very promising.

Let us know how you get on
  3. #3
    looking good
  4. #4
If it goes as good as it looks I'm laughing!
  5. #5
looking great mate. if you dont mind me asking how much did you get the engine for? as for the wiring diagram i dont no where to get one from but is there one in the haynes manual?
  6. #6
The haynes manual does have a wiring digram but its not specific to the mk2 vts which is a slight problem.

For £500 I managed to get:

Complete Engine ("02" plate 24k with 3 month warranty) , gearbox, driveshafts, complete front struts calipers etc.., ECU loom and the all important "VTS" badges.

    The wheels were only £75.

    Bargain!

nice one, looking good, speak to artnmotion he has a mk1 vtr converted vts and might be able to help
  8. #8
I'll drop him a line, hopefully he can help me out.
  9. #9
Also PM Dan, he will be able to help you!

    Click me
  10. #10
That's Dan's old car. It was Dan and one of his mates that done the conversion i think. Try him if you don't have any luck.

    Engine looks nice and shiny!

<Edit> Beat me to it Mark
  11. #11
alright do you know if that conversion is possible on a Furio mk2 V reg?
cuz 1.48V jus isnt doing it for me an ive jus blown the gasket lol
  12. #12
anything is possible if you put your mind to it
  13. #13
if ya can read ma other post i made... n reply if u got ne info pls

I dropped him a line so hopefully he can shed some light on the sitaution.

Andyt84 - There's plenty more shiny bits on the way but I've gotta get it running before I can worry too much about them.

    Cheers for the help.

Thats looking really good. Please tell me how it runs because i am toying with the idea of a VTS conversion too.

    Again, good work!
  16. #16
Mine was a mk1 - mk1 conversion so wiring was fairly similar.

Dont put the vts badges on it mate, keep it as a sleeper and leave vtr badges on.

As said in my PM, Ratty is the guy to speak to about engines.
  17. #17
Yeah I was thinking of keeping the badges on but haven't made my mind up yet.

I'm wishing I would have just brought a vts now I'm having all this hassle with the wiring but I'm sure it'll all be worth it when I get it running .
  18. #18
Oooo, nasty, nice to see the engines being used... Good man!
  19. #19
that is one great price you got all of that for, the reason i asked was because im thinking of having a go at doing this myself.
  20. #20
The engine looks very clean indeed mate. Did the engine not come with an EGR Valve?
  21. #21
It was a good price alot the engines for sale were high milers or had bits from here there and every where i wasn't willing to give any bloke a couple hundread quid for some engine he had buried in a shed.

You gotta give it a go it aint easy and its hard work overcoming the unforseen problems but at the end you'll have a sense of achievemnent, saved your self a couple of hundread quid and hopefully become an engine conversion legend*.

I'm looking forward to getting it movin now and getting some more bits for it.

(*Legendary status is not guaranteed you may need to do a twin engined saxo for that kind of status)
  22. #22
It did come with an ERG valve but i didn't have anywhere to connect it and it didn't seem essential so I just blocked the hole up with another fine fabricated part.

Hopefully it wont come back to haunt me
  23. #23
whats the bent rubber pipe for on the last pic that is running aong the bottom of the ecu and resting on te alternator? its just that i dont know where mine is supposed to go after i done the conversion!
  24. #24
Wont need the egr valve matey with that manifold, which looks great by the way. Will go a nice burnt bluey, purple once been used.
  25. #25
wasnt the engine a bit damaged though cause the mate that crashed the black vts took one hell of a smash
  26. #26
There doesn't appear to be any damage it was perfectly secure within the engine mounts and from what I can see everything looks good on the inside.

Most of the impact would have be absorbed by the rear of the car the front had minimal if any form of damage. All the oil was clean etc.

I suppose i'll only know how good it is when its up and running.
  27. #27
worst that could of happend was the timing gets knocked out (although if you heard the engine running before taking it away you would know this) otherwise check the timing and if its ok your fine, if its not then it might get expensive.
  28. #28
Timing is fine, the engine is in excellent condition considering only thing it needs is a new alt belt lol! the engine didn't look that shiny before ste got the sander out lol.... I might get him to polish my engine bits lol. Hopefully it'll be running this weekend as I had to stop the wiring last week as it got too dark lol

The bent pipe connects to the electro purge valve inside the drivers arch, if you trace the wire in and remove the arch liner (ratehr than the wing) you'll see its connected to a brown cylinder (looks a bit like a fuel filter)... this valve (activated once the car is at running temp) allows gases from the top of the fuel tank to pass (via a charcoal cylinder) into the inlet manifold to be burnt.... this is just another emissions control device
  30. #30
where does it link up to on the vts engine though? i cant find anything to slot it onto!
  31. #31
Yeh sorry, there should be a connector on the base of the inlet manifold, on the ECU side ( I think its directly below idle stepper for the throttle cable)

You've gotta stop reading them haynes manuals :

    Try watching tv or something.
  33. #33
You wouldn't have a VTS engine sitting in the bay of that VTr if I didn't know that manual back to front lol....
  34. #34
It lives!!!!!!..... mwahahahahahahahahahahahahaha..... had nearly given up hope after starting very late today but I finally managed to find the right wire that was stopping all the fun!.... the wire from the relay to fuse 9 (fuel pump circuit) as the VTR loom is ghey!.... theres only a small amount left i.e tidying and finalising things!..... it sounds awesome!!
  35. #35
Cant wait to drive it now.

I can vouch for the sound
  36. #36
Thanks to everyone who offered advice it was much appreciated.
  37. #37
    get pics n vids up!!
  38. #38
we did a phone vid but it made it sound like a bag of spanners! lol I'll take the camcorder down tomorrow and do a proper vid once its all tidied up as there is an abundance of wires strewn throughout the engine bay lol, couldn't be arsed to put the cowling back on today lol
  39. #39
Finally took it for a test drive last night despite the brake lights being constantly on (Still a few faults to iron out ).

It sounds amazing I only went a couple of yards but it drove really well.

The manifold has now changed to an expensive looking gold colour, it still looks mint!.

I'm well impressed but i'll be glad to get it working 100%, then I can give it some revs.

Big thanks to Mr AX_Beefy who worked on the car whilst I went Go Karting (I had no choice).
