   Is the heatshield (pictured) needed?
   
   As you can see in in a sorry state and am wandering if i can just take it off or replace it cheaply?

   yes it is needed as the heat from the block and manifold will damage the alternator

   It will heat the wires up and they will go brittle, my 16v has suffered it loads of times i need a heat shield on it!! i pit one on but it caught on fire!!

   scrape that silver shit off that one and spray it up with heat resistant spray to whatever colour you want it or leave it as the bare metal
