Stock VTS shocks vs Bilstein B8 vs Bilstein GroupN

  1. #1
I decided to go more specific after this thread - http://www.saxperience.com/forum/sho...d.php?t=369353

how does oem VTS shocks compare to B8? Bilstein are more dampened?

If so, what is better for occasional fast road use and track (mostly rally-sprints) - B8 or groupN (with custom springs and uprated torsion bar of course!)

comfort is not an issue - but handling on poor roads is!

GrpN is the "Rally spec" so will be harder than B8's

i think most swear by B8's for the comfort on a daily but if comforts not an issue id go for GrpN

Ive paid a deposit to a chap on here for Pugsport GrpN dampers with 325lb faulkner springs, envisaging it being a bit solid, but im not after comfort so much anymore

    i see...
and how does grN perform on poor surfaces?
this is supposed to be both gravel+tarmac shocks?

The proper grp n (black cover) dampers are available is Tarmac & gravel spec, I've just fitted the Tarmac ones & 23mm t bars to my vts, it's seriously stiff, compression damping is very high compared to the 3 way proflex I have on the rear of my 106.

What do "rally sprints" consist of?

Yeah these Pugsports off db are tarmac, so theyre nice and stiff with nice feedback?

a short race on a compact track, all on 2d gear (rarely even need to shift to 1st in 1/2 corners)

so it means that it's 100% slow turns (below 100km/h) - will stiff suspension work for this? b8 vs gr.N still can't decide...

The Group N uses thicker shafts so is stronger, as well as holding more oil so helping keep damping consistent. Bilstein B8's are 30% stiffer damping over standard.

i've got that already, but is it important I'll be on track for 10 minutes max?

    so...
    Option #1 155/20/B8
I suppose rear B6 will work good with my 20mm Tbs... so 155 springs would be a good match? If so, the damping characteristic of B6/8 might work good?

    Option #2 155/20/grN
Should I bother that grN with 20mm TBs and 155 springs will be overdamped?
And will grN perform good in terms of grip if it's a little bumpy?

    Option #3 180/20/grN
Tbs and rear dampers - overdamped?

    Option #4 180/20/grN/B6
Understeer? Might be overcomed by rear height and tyre pressure?

PS I also had a phone talk with a guy who won Russian Rally championship on grA 106 and his opinion was that rear suspension is far less important then front as the rear ob the cas is super light... sound like an argument for option 4...
