1.1 noisy exhaust

  1. #1
Hi everyone, long time reader, first time poster.

So, I have and issue with my saxo 1.1.

I would normally just whip it into a garage, but i've had a lot of work done on this recently so wondered if i could resole it myself.

I recently had a new back box and exhaust clamp fitted and since then it's been kinda boomy and bassy (more than i'd like lol) and the other day I noticed I was losing power in lower gears/revs and now when idle there's a this bassy rumbling (making the car sound worse than before the work was done).
I, obviously took it back to the garage and they gave it another look but told me that the exhaust was still fine and that having the new back box fitted had not upset the rest of the unit (I can kinda believe this as i've been under the car myself and all seems secure and fine.)

They did suggest the I took a look at new sparks and leads as it does seem the car is missing (it's THAT kinda sound)...both these i've changed yesterday but no result....ANY SUGGESTIONS????
    Thanks in advance

    Dave

Is the clamp between the back box and centre pipe on correctly? the joint could be a little wonky, hence not making a tight seal, but new exhaust are usually a little louder because they are clean.

    hope this helps a little.

Is it a new standard back box or an aftermarket one?

Sometimes replacement backboxes are like that, my old 1.1 was pretty loud n it was totally standard, I Think manufacturer quality ones are the best bet

Remember if your saxo is a 2000 onwards there is no cat underneath, just a cat in the manifold and a straight center pipe underneath, and a silencer in the backbox, making it slightly louder in my opinion.

Mine is totally standard but quite loud on tickover.

Did you use exhaust paste when putting on your clamp?

If not, this is where a 'loud' noise will be coming from.

Try this as a quick and easy fix:

Thanks for all these replies guys...I'm gonne try and have a closer inspection today....hopefully something I can take care of myself....really like lewis united's theory about newer back boxes being louder cos they're clean....hadn't thought of that....just worries about the loss of power i'm getting and stuttering when idle.....
