Suspension update ADVICE needed

  1. #1
Planning an update for the little car. Gonna do each bit in stages getting ready for my turbo conversion. Gonna treat myself with all the overtime I've been putting in.

Idea was to run the following. Any advice would be great:

    Gp A Rear Anti-Roll Bar - 25mm

Not sure what size torsion bars to run...???

Vibratechnics Mounts all round with Powerflex ARB and axel bushes.

    AST Sportline 1 Coilovers

    AST Solid Top Mounts

    AST Stock Hatch rear dampers

    Gp N Front Wishbones

Good option all round you think.

depends what your using the car for? and what lb/inch springs you go for on the front.

As above, is this a daily driver, track car or something in between?

You need to balance front and rear 'spring rates'. Get that sorted before you start swapping anti-roll bars imo.

Don't waste your money on a 25mm rear anti roll bar, the bog standard 24mm one from a 106 gti/1.6 rallye is more than adequate an upgrade over the 22mm VTR one so can be bought for £90 new or around £40 2nd hand in good condition.

You've made no reference up uprated torsion bars to the 25mm ARB is pointless extra expense.

AST coilovers are very good but cusotmer service for the average tom, dick or harry is very poor, possibly due to high work load though and having to prioritise company orders over individual sales though and not just general slackness.

Those wishbones are a huge rip off too. for £150 for the pair you could replace the bushes on your existing wishbones and have arguably a better setup anyway.

Seeing as it's payday next week I'm wanting to upgrade all the bushes and mounts.

As said before, I should of put more information on this and intended use. I want this to be a daily driver so looking for help with this.

    Bushes

Ideally I want stiffest/hardest bushes you can get which can be used for mainly road but a track day here and there.

Powerflex - Obviously these are quite a large name and was looking at the purple bushes.

But they also do the black bushes which are apparently stiffer but do they warrant the bump in price?

    Mounts

Again, I'm after some of the hardest mounts to be used on road and track...

I think I'm set on Vibra-Technics road mounts but if I could get away with it I will opt for the competition mounts. I'm just after some opinions on what would suit best.

    Thanks in advance...

Any news guys. Not sure weather to get the comp vibra tech mounts over the road ones and the black powerflex bushes over the purple ones.
Wondering what the cabin noise will be like compared with the two.

Get poly race bushes for front wishbones, get the vibra tech fast road mounts. Or maybe the competion ones, but they are very hard so not go on a daily.

Fast road would be good for a good track car.

Yes AST are very good but serivce is slow I would know!! The guy who runs it in USA for 10 days, he had my Ast for serivce for 3 weeks already!!!!!!

I would look at the gaz gold kit on kam,

Depending on what front springs up go for will help you pick the right rear torsion bars.

Hmm say 250 lb would be max for a car used alot on puplic roads, but that up to you.

Seeing as you are asking about cabin noise then it sounds like its more a road car.

Id just get the run of the mill replacments like the Powerflex Purples/PolyRace/floflrx etc

    Engine mounts, just get GrpNs.

Dont bother with them wishbones, and dont bother with the 25mm ARB as you are just wasting money.

Cheers guys. Yeah it is mainly a road car. I am doing a install in the back so there will be quiet a bit of weight on the rear.

So vibra tech road mounts and purple powerflex. Would the black powerflex cope with the extra weight put in the rear or would the babin noise really loud.

Sorry for all the questions just wanted the good advice you lot offer

Purple ones will be plenty of an upgrade and perfectly manageable for roads being its most use.

If you're putting a weighty install in theres little benefit of putting all the highest performing parts in if you can't make best use of it.

Honestly the purples will be fine.

I just wanted it to still handle pretty well with the heavy install, there is alot of it lol...

As you say the purples ones will be more than fine. I was only simplling asking about the black bushes in case they handle the heavy load better.

Sorry, but this just seems like your going in two completely different directions!

If this is going to be a daily drive for the odd track day then I would reccommend the following.

    Purple Powerflex bushes all round
Gaz GHA Coilovers with 200lb springs.
Stock rear ARB and Torsion bars.
Stock top mounts (new ones while youre changing the front suspension though)
Stock wishbones with the powerflex bushes in.

That setup will give you good handling at a good price and save you alot of unnecessary expense.

The initial setup you were talking about would, in my eyes, make a dangerous road car. There are two many shit roads in the UK and you'd be bump steering and skidding all over the place.

You have also forgot to mention one very important thing in your setup. Tyres!!!
