1.5 desiel engine change problems

  1. #1
    Where so I start.

First of all it's a 106 but they are basically the same,

The car is a mk2 and has had a donar engine from a supposed mk2, we found that it was also fitted to some mk1's and the only difference being the fuel pump.

Anyway we hve used the loom gearbox and starter motor off the previous engine.

The car turned over at first but struggled and the starter motor was making a horrible noise. We thought that the starter might have been damaged so swapped it for another that matched the engine and were still getting a horrible noise, the car starts and runs fine after it's just your starting it.

Anyone know what it might be, we really don't know what it could be,

worn ring gear on the flywheel maybe?

Someone told me taking the flywheel off and turning it 90 degrees can help, cause the engine will only fire at top dead centre or bottom dead centre, anyone heard of this before?

yes it can work, we used to do it on big diesels on plant machinery but on a car where parts are readily available its not worth the hassle. Haven't you got the flywheel off the old engine?

Just to close the thread the fly wheel was the source of the problem.

Swapped the one off the other engine and the car is running sweet now =]

    Thanks for all the help
