Clutch problem...

Saxos...they seem to give my wallet a problem every month!

What's happening is when I press the clutch down, it feels fine until about 3/4 down - then it sort of catches/clicks before going the final 1/4 down. Only just started doing this today.

    Any ideas?

Firstly just check your floor mats... pull them back a bit. Then try a new clutch cable.

    Any funny gearbox noises?

FFS, forgot about my mats - will check later. No funny noises that I've noticed - is the clutch cable easy to change?

    Have you got power steering?

Unfortunately I don't. What makes you ask?

Okay then, changing the clutch cable lots easier. Out of 5 i'd give it a 2 in terms of difficulty.

Well definitely not my mat - removed it completely, and exactly the same.

    Out comes my Haynes book...

Ok, had a mechanic give it a look over. I've been told it's a bearing. When shown where, it seemed to be a bearing for an arm moved, and have been told it's hand movable.

His estimate was £200-300 to put a new clutch in, but wait until it goes first because it's a hell of a job!

if its rough but no noises its more likely to be a dry cable. if its the bearing you will hear a noise. cable is easy enough just unhook from back of pedal and pull from bulkhead. replace new one with same method. as for clutch it isnt as bad a job as you think i had one done in 3 hours all in without a ramp

Doesn't feel rough. The arm (?) he pointed out to me seemed to be located underneath the sqaure ignition coil, next to the battery.

My old 306 used to be same, really used to annoy me lol, basicly if you look up under the dash where the cable joins the clutch pedal, theres like a plastic bit on the end, it was kind of catching on something, i re-greased all that and afterwards it was perfect. Oretty surprised how much difference it made tbh. Its a similar sort of set up on saxos so maybe try that if theres no noises and the clutch still works okay.

Okay, so the clutch is rumbling when pressed down and biting - is it time to get it booked in? What should I expect?

rumbling as in a grinding sort of noise or is it just grumbling?

Grinding noise, which can be felt through the clutch.

most likely release bearing, get the entire clutch kit.
