Couple Problems With Proposed Purchase

  1. #1
Been offered a swap for a 98 Plate VTR, but having viewed it, the Speedo doesnt move, and the Starter Motor is funny...

When you turn the ignition key all the way, it doesnt start, then bring it back to the 3rd click and try again and it starts first time. What could this be???

Also, what causes the Speedo not to move? Is there a fuse etc or would the full Speedo need changing?

    Thanks

The speedo is controlled by the gearbox.

    Check the wiring.

Probably a little bit obvious, but may need a new starter motor. Hope this helps (Y)

The lad reckons it doesnt 'need' a new starter motor, its just sticky, so i said well why does it do it and how is it fixed... And as for the Speedo..

Anyway, the guy has agreed to have these problems fixed, but the car also has 130k on the clock, which has worried me?

Any advice before deciding what to do???

What is the worst case scenario that could be affecting the speedometer? Been told off a couple of people that it will most likely be nothing important, and its an easy fix?

    yeh hes right, nothing major.

Maybe new wiring, but in the long run as it has a a lot of miles it may need a need gearbox. Or could just be a sensor.

Start small and work your way up.

Thing is mate, ive got a decent Astra SXI that is totally road worthy and only needs a few small repairs (Blown exhaust & Brake Pads)

Is it worth it swapping a 02 Astra for a 98 VTR, bearing in mind VTR's are my favorite car???

worst scenario is it will never work in which case get a gps and go by that but be sure to knock lots of money within a deal. hope that helps.

in all fearness I would never swap a newer car for an older one.... and I dont think you should. sell yours for as much money as you can and get one thats newer and beta.

    better saxo as you like'em

Thanks, ill have to give it some serious thought...

I was thinking along the lines, the 98 vtr will be cheaper insurance and petrol than im paying now, and hopefully will get a permanent contract at work in August, then i can look towards getting a MK2 again!!!

    Lot of thinking ahead!

Well the guy has been in touch again today, and said the starter motor has been looked at, and its fine, but its something to do with the key, it has a chip in or something that makes it not start first time, but second turn of the key.

    This sounds too funny???

Also said that the speedo problem is a clip that clips to the Gearbox, and its easy sorted?

    Still undecided what to do!
