How to clean Head?

  1. #1
What do you guys use to clean the head up?

Another thought when cleaning valves, pistons etc i have been told not to clean to close to the edge and on the valves certain parts of the stem as this seals the guide any ideas?

When cleaning valves etc when should they be replaced, when pitted etc?

Gunk then in a dish washer / parts washer there is some stuff out called aqua blast that's pretty good and a stiff nylon brush should be fine around the valve seats as long as you don't use a corrosive cleaner. Just don't use a wire brush on the inner parts as it will cause more harm than good but its fine to use wire/brass brush on the outside of the casing.

also check to see if the head is warped and if it is send it off to be skimmed that will give you a nice mating surface when it comes to putting it back on.

Cheers dude, its going for skimming shortly, just getting most of the stuff off.

What do you think about the chunks missing although,at the top where every cylinder sits, would that just skim off?

all depends on how deep the chunks are and how much material they need to take off to make sure the head sits level.

It looks pretty deep, is a new head needed?

The engineer who will be skimming it should ideally asses the head first to see how bad it is then decide wether it should be ok to skim or not

Also as far as cleaning it goes? If your taking it to be skimmed why not just ask the place to clean it too? I paid like 35quid as a cash job on my 8v head to have the stem seals changed skim and a clean, he put in his acid tank over night (I think it's acid really can't remember) to really give it a good clean, then in the parts washer to rinse it all down etc he also sprayed it silver so It looked brand new. But he did all that for 35quid cash, obv it may vary for you as it's a diff place but shouldnt be much

I'll try find a pic out for you mate

Thanks mate, that does look rather good.

Was that a vtr swap for another vtr head i didnt read it all.

Your pistons also look quite clean did you do that or were they already like that, mine are completely caked in crap pure black.

The guy thats skimming it, is doing it for £25.00.

no it was actually a s1 rallye head, and i fitted a newmans cam whilst i was there
are they? i hought they were filthy lol

ahh thats a good price tbh, ask him to give a proper clean for you whilst its there mate and put it in the acid dip. also whilst your getting the head done i would recommend the stem seals being changed, they are dead cheap to buy and dont cost much extra to fit
