[ HOW-TO ] Retrim Saxo Door Cards AND Roof Liner - Diy

  1. #1
ok so im new to the whole "how-to" thing but i wanted to give it ago..
pretty much got step by step photo's on how i did mine

im not a professional, its just something i wanted to have ago at im super pleased about the outcome

    Roofliner guide here:
    http://www.saxperience.com/forum/sho...79#post5299179

    here go's!

Time taken: Dunno! roughly? 4 hours for both doorcards..
Difficulty: Not that hard, just abit fiddly!
    Cost: all in around £20

    Stuff you will need:

    - Needle nose pliers, any size, no preference. small ones help tho..

    - Scissors:
1 pair of material / sharp scissors
1 pair of smaller sharp scissors

    - Fabric glue
i used this stuff, it cost me £5 from my local carpet shop

-Heat/Hot air gun (what ever you want to call it)

-Material you want to retrim with
(The stuff i used is approx 157cm wide and a meter in length and had a fair bit left over)

    -Your door cards (obviously)

-Torx screwdriver (unsure of the size, but ill update when i find out, no pic but if you dont know what a screwdriver looks like, then please close this guide now.. lol

And some space to work in, luckily for me, my parents house is being renovated at the moment, so the living room is completely empty

    Step by step:

    - Open you car door and remove the torx screw from the doorcard (nearest the dash)

There is also a torx screw (same size) in the door handle (the part you pull to close the door from the inside) Remove the screw and pull the plastic part out of the door card, use a flat head screw driver to get under the edges and gently prise it out

    - Remove the speaker cover (should just pull out (You dont have to remove it, but it makes pulling the door card off easier!)
    (no pic)

    - Gently pull the door card away from the door, its held on by approx 9 clips, these have a tendancy to break ALOT but they only cost around 12p each from citroen (as you can see i broke a couple of mine)

    - Use the heat gun to soften up the plastic rivits holding the material part to the door card, and pull the card apart one rivet at a time (arrows show the rivets - Caution Please mind your fingers here, they get extremely hot - Duh..) lol

    - Once all rivets are melted and the 2 parts are apart, you should have this

    - Use the heat gun to melt the plastic rivits holding the door handle surround at the back and pull the cover off

put these parts out the way somewhere

    - Lay your material over the top and line it up to how you want it
(Tip: Patterned material like i chose is a baddd idea and it distorts over the edges and stuff, but if you are careful you can make it work)

    - Cut around the material leaving around 2cm over lay around the edge with the material scissors
    (no pic)

    - When you have the material all in the right places, Spray the glue on and pull the material over

Make sure you remove any wrinkles or creases that occur while the glue is still fairly damp!

    - when spraying the glue, do small areas at a time, and pull the material over in stages, working your way towards the edge

    - Once glued in to place, you can cut off any excess material around the edge

    - Cut out the door handle holes

    Now for the annoying/fiddly/hard part..

    - Use the heat gun to melt all the rivets around the card, and use the needle nose pliers to pull them in to a pointy shape.. like this..

    - On the back of the material part of the doorcard, use the smaller scissors to pierce holes all around the material where the plastic rivets pull through, can be tricky, but not too bad when you get the hang of it
    (no pic)

    - Put the 2 halfs back together and pull all the plastic rivets through, again can be tricky.. some of the rivets wont want to come back through the holes, but will when you force them )

    - Heat the rivets up again, and use the pliers to flatten the ends down now so it secures the 2 halfs together, once all rivets are melted flat, there shouldnt be any rattles or any movement..

    - Put the door handle suround back in and melt the rivets again and flatten them so its held in securely
    (no pic)

    - Retrimmed!

I also painted my speaker covers white to match the rest of my interior

    - Re-fit them to your car, make sure all the clips are pushed in, and the screws are secured tightly

    Job done!!

Any comments, questions, edits.. let me know and ill fix it up as soon as possible..

please bare in mind, im new to this so its not perfect, but im very happy with the outcome

Feel free to pm me if you have any suggestions, or if you get stuck somewhere.. what ever!!

    Top stuff buddy looks awesome!

Great guide mate. Looks really different ( In a fuck me i want those sort of way ). Its better to take the original material from the insert before sticking the new material on though gives a better surface for the glue to bond to.

    Thanks for the replys!!

I wasnt sure if the padding would come away with the material, so i left it on, feels much nicer then the original material

This is my 1st go at anything like this, and im more then pleased with the outcome, if i could go back and do it again, i wouldnt change a thing!

    Thanks for the advice tho

nice guide mate , will be doing mine in leather in next couple of weeks
  7. #7
Nice guide, few things I did differently when I did mine.

    1) Instead of heating the rivets up I drilled them out then used a glue gun to fix it back on.

    2) I used contact adhesive instead of the spray glue. I found the spray glue to be fairly poor and just wouldn't stick my material.

I agree with you on leaving the old material there. On my first attempt I took the material off which took most of the padding off aswell and once fitted it was just solid and horrible. Then did another with the old material on and it stuck just as well and it looks and feels a lot better.
  8. #8
i actually made a start on this today, but i just used brute force and broke the rivets off

was planning on just screwing it back together with lots of small screws lol....

i also took my old material off, it came off in one piece which was suprising for a 13 year old doorcard lol. it was SO dusty i almost choked when i gave it a shake, so thats something to bear in mind....

Absolute brilliant thread here mate I'm going to do my door cards in leatherette but I were just wondering would just normal spray glue work or need to be high temp glue, as in summer it gets pretty hot in the saxo? Again mate top marks for this thread!
  33. #33
The stuff i used is carpet glue, pretty heavy duty stuff
(designed for sticking carpet to stairs with out using carpet spike strips)

if it wasnt strong stuff the carpet could move, and people would hurt them selves falling down stairs

sure a small bit of material the size of a doorcard shouldnt be an issue

just bare in mind, theres no such thing as too much glue
  34. #34
Going to order my material tomorrow mate and were wondering how much material you had left? So 1 meter by ?cm, Cheers

The stuff i used for door cards was 1 meter by 157cm-ish
and had enough left over to cover say the sun roof slider panel, and a few little off cuts.

to do door cards, and roof liner, 3 meters by 157cm is more then enough, enough left over to do parcel shelf too!

(157 is 60 inches) just so you know

    This looks immense!
How hard was it to spray the roof plastics/sun visors/grab handles
Should really do mine but don't wanna make a pig's ear of it!
  51. #51
Hmm it was a bit of an effort, cause I accidentally skewed mine lower down and so it was a bugger when I got tp the top as lines came up in the material. what saved the day was my material cause it was stretchy! Soo if I were doing it again I'd make sure its straight the whole time, only do teeny sections at a time (I did about 4 inch half strips), oh and glue both sides - roof lining and material, let it get tacky for a few mins then stick it down smoothing as you go. If you're worried about the awkward bits just glue the tits outta them and then hold it down for 5

Sorry if that was really rambley?!

a little tip would be to spray it on and give it a quick rub with a spare piece of cloth,

dries it up abit and makes it stickier

    What did you do?

my only advice would be heat gn/hair-dryer and hope it melts the glue enough to unstick the material?

give it ago, and see how it goes
  71. #71
gonna have a go tonight. do you think using a hair dryer hot enough, is enough to melt the rivets?

Probably not, but could give it ago...

you could always get one of those long necked lighters, you know the ones for lighting oven cooker rings, and candles..

    if that helps?
  73. #73
did it with the hair dryer. first couple i tried the flat bits snapped but on the ones after i put my hand over the other end of the hair dryer and it heated up more and melted the plastic slightly but enough to pull the cars off
run into a slight problem though if anyone can help. im using black fabric. and its thin. and when i say thin its a bed sheet yes i know cheap skate but wanted to try this 1st to see how well i could do it and it has turned out really well except one lil bit where i must have put glue on to thick and theres a faint white patch (like an old jizz stain lmao) any ideas how to get that off? would a slight scrub of a sponge with warm water and say a bit of washing powder in get the stain off?

EDIT: just noticed im using a bed sheet and the glue looks like jizz stain hmmmm not goin down well that is it lol
  74. #74
Are you sure it's glue?! Or are you just trying to cover up your little secrets?! Also, any advice on wrapping the different bits? Was thinking about doing it, but don't want to mess it up and make it look completely crap. Also, if you are using a thicker material such as leather do you think that it would make it any harder? Just because the stuff would have a larger gap between the bits and the car. :o

    Thanks

What are you planning on wrapping? Anything is possible, just takes patience! (Something i dont have a lot of... But i managed to do it, so im sure anyone can!)

I dont know much about leather/leatherette, so i cant really help there, might even require some stitching as apposed to just spray adhesive..

Looks like a professional job to be honest. Which pars of the interior have to sprayed white? I'm picking up my Black VTR soon and I'm thinking about spraying parts bright green, like the Focus RS green but I'm not sure what i can spray or not and what would look right or not.

" Please read this - The material i used is 157cm / 60 inch wide, to cover the roofliner i used 2 meters of this
If your are doing your doorcards AND parcel shelf to match, the offcut from the door cards can be used to cover the sun-roof slide panel, and the off-cut from the roofliner can be used to do the parcel shelf
So if you are doing your door cards, roof, and parcel shelf you will need 3 meters (aslong as its 157cm/60 inches wide) "

Says that on the roofliner guide ^

i got my material from an ebay shop called Nortexmill (iirc)

Probably not seeing as my guide is to help people DO IT THEM SELVES

    and its pretty straight forward/easy
  98. #98
Super guide might have to do it as looks kinda easy
  99. #99
    It was suprisingly easy

Never done anything like it before, just used common sense and some patience, turned out spot on

    hmm all i can suggest

    - Spray the material, And the headliner

    - get a spare piece of cloth and dab the spray glue so its not so "wet"

    - Once you stick the material down, give it abit of heat, not too much (hair dryer or heat gun for a few seconds)

-leave something heavy on it over night so it holds the material to the glue for longer

All little things you could try?

Not sure that has been asked before!

Tbh i completely forgot about the plastic doorcards My bad!

me personally, i wouldnt "Retrim" them, i would vinyl wrap or spray paint them

thanks man had an idea last night as head hit pillow taken doorcards off completly and plating it with metal sheeting or carbon look on thin mdf but your doors look the bomb man thought mine in camo (black/white/grey) would be cool grrr decisions!!

Wicked! Going to get rid of these horrific East-Coast door cards tomorrow!
  108. #108
Can some link me to some decent spray glue, the stuff I use is crap and in this hot weather we are having the glue melts and the leatherette comes un-stuck from the doorcard! It looks terrible!
  109. #109
Try evostick spread on stuff. It's not a spray but it sticks like sh*t to a blanket as it's solvent based. Comes in a red and silver tin.

Great guide m8 , exactly what I've been looking for cheers
  112. #112
Did this today, but no matter how hard I try I cannot get the bastard rivets back through the holes, you think its a viable idea to slice these badboys off and become best friends with duct tape/ glue? heh heh hehhh
  113. #113
I had trouble with those too ^

Real pain in the bumholio... managed to melt em and re-form them with needle nose plyers..

Off topic, but the headliner and doorcards from this guide is now up for sale (See for-sale thread)

Hey everyone, new to this forum and this is the first thread I've seen - great tutorial for a newbie like me, and looks wicked too

    Awesome guide!
Anyone got any idea what size torx screwdriver you need for the screws on the door card and the screws holding the speaker to the door?
I posted on here a while back about a cutting out problem with my stereo, Chased the problem to a dodgy speaker so going to replace the two, Nothing overly loud just a decent quality sound...
Anyway i just need to know what screwdriver im looking for!
Ebay is giving me T sizes? Not sure what that means but i may order some fabric at the same time and redo my door cards too
Just need a seat one now!
  116. #116
Great guide mate.. I actually want to do mine now lol... I like the way you painted the speaker cover to match too ... Fair play..
