Coolant bleeding

Hi all I checked the search for bleeding the coolant on my Vts and have a couple of questions. First of all why do you need to use a expansion tank? Surely filling the system without the rad cap on will not allow any pressure to build up? And if you do fill the radiator with a expansion tank surely it is going to over fill the radiator if you fill up to above the max marks on the radiator?

Probably a very simple answer lol I just thought I'd ask so I can bleed my car properly as the temp gauge is bouncing all over the place at the moment!

    Thanks :-)

makes the water level higher than the rest of the car, so the air goes into the expansion tank instead

i ended up losing half of mine to the floor, as you have to keep it filled but i don't see where the rest is meant to go

i just pour water in and open the bleed screw and one on the side of the stat.
    easy peasy
