Tapping from rear end of engine towards intake?

   Having done some reading it could be:
   

   • Tappets
   • Spark Plugs
   • Bottom End (defo not this)

   
   Anything else I should consider?

   Is it a rattle sort of noise?, could be your release bearing drop clutch see if it goes away

   inlet mani gasket?

   almost certainly injectors if its a slight ticking noise. If its louder then lifters/tappets or loose spark plug.

   It changes when you rev the engine and cannot be heard (maybe due to road noise) over about 3000 rpm.
   
   Mainly heard when driving around back streets when doing 20-30mph and its a tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick kind of noise.
   
   Tappets or sparks then?

   I have the same on my VT on a cold start at low mph 10-30 just a constant tick tick tick tick on accel and cruise but then just stops after bit.

   could quite possibly be an air leak on inlet side

   pretty sure thats your problem too mate as it stops when your car heats up

   Bit of a bump but I have this problem, seems only when my engines warm though.
