taking apart fog lights?

  1. #1
im trying to take apart my fog lights so i can spray the reflectors inside them. they've been cooking in the oven now for ages and the glue just isnt melting, like when doing the headlights earlier. How do people spray the insides of fogs?

lol ive just managed to cook a pizza quicker

some of them are sealed using a silicon glue or somin not the heat stuff so it wont melt. the only way to get them apart is to sit there with a knife or somin and cut the glue out then use tiger seal or somin to reseal them.

and thats a really horrible job

I put my fogs in the oven for around 10 minutes, then ran a knife around the edge to thin the glue. Then just prised them apart with the knife Then sprayed the inserts, back in the oven the melt the glue and stuck them back together

    What was your plan?

I found one of my headlights was sealed with the glue that comes apart when you heat it, the other one wasn't...I had to really prize it apart, ended up cleaning and cutting all the old glue off and putting it back together with Tiger seal.

For the fog lights, the glue also didn't melt when heated, although it did make it easier to prise apart with a knife once heated, again I cut it all out and put them back with tiger seal.
It is possible to use an abrasive polish such as T-cut to remove the chrome from the inside of the fog lights back to gloss black underneath, its fiddly but does work mate.

Did you actually manage to get a good covering on the inserts? Bet that took ages to spray lol

Have you got any pics of them finished? be interested to see how they turned out.

this is the only pic i have
i sanded the surface lightly so turned out fine. i couldnt get a covering on the the edge nearest the wheel as you can sort of see in the pic, but thats only a little corner. obviously would be much more easier/better coverage if taken apart but i couldnt

Yeah it would have been ideal to take them apart, tbh i think you've done pretty well there!

not bad though for what u had to deal with buddy

I also couldnt get mine apart so i just sanded the insides with a fine paper to get them down to black. Looks ok, you cant really tell tbh.

i was lazy so i sprayed the glass (they dont work they were put in by previous owner)

was considering that aswell tbh but prefer the insides sprayed

To make fogs black you dont need to spray them, its black plastic. You just need to remove the fog light then fill it with some srong oven cleaner. it strips the silver lining off, then jsut wash them out and dry them.
