Ive got my MOT looming so i thought id ask you guys advice on something.

I think my gearbox is dying.. It pretty much takes my whole weight leant on the gear stick to get it in first (yes the clutch is down lol) and now 2nd is getting slightly like it too but nowhere near as bad.
Also, this has only happened a few times but changing gear it has crunched despite my clutch being fully down... So im thinking i might have two probs on my hands...

    What do you reckon?
  2. #2
it could be any number of problems sadly...... could even be a bent/knackered gear linkage. but if the clutch is biting as and when it should be then its most likely a synchro issue with the box........
  3. #3
    likely to be expensive then?
  4. #4
not neccesarily, but will most likley mean the car off the road for a weekend, decent secondhand boxes are cheap enough. circa 50-150 quid, clutches around 80... linkages possibly 20-30quids, without labour. so probably worth finding someone local thats handy with a spanner lol.. until its apart its always hard to diagnose any issues so could be none of the above, or sods law will be all of them....

Before any of that, have a fiddle with the clutch adjuster.

Where's the bite on the peddle? Can you select the gears easily when the engine isn't on?

As in how far it lifts before biting? And i havent really tried but i will give it a go when im in my car next

    That's the one.

Does it bite at the top or the bottom of the pedal travel, also how much pedal travel is there?
  8. #8
I would say more bottom i think, and a fair amount of travel

Adjust the clutch adjuster to move the bite away from the floor, see if that makes anything easier.

Also check if you can get gears easily without the engine on

It could be a number of things... the first one to come into my head would be the cable, followed by the clutch.

If you need someone to look at it, or replace any parts then get in touch. My prices are very competitive and i've always got spare time.

Youre a bit far from me im afraid but thanks all the same!
I think a while back i had the cable lubed up, so im hoping it hasnt given up on life yet..

Oh okay, i would assume it's about an hours drive? Down the a12 and m25 to dorking.

Lubing the cable won't make much difference, it's probably stretched. You can adjust SOME cables

Not too bad, but im very poor haha. Student and all

Im gunna have to sort it out relatively soon i think judging by these replies, Im just scared of paying out money lol! If i fail a MOT, will they let me drive home?
  14. #14
Yes, you'll be fine to drive the car [s]home or[/s] to a garage to have work carried out.

They won't fail it on the clutch issue though.

Oh, and my cheap rates make up for peoples travelling
  15. #15
you can drive it home but then obviously you cant use it until you take it for a retest but you will then have to pay for a full retest rather than a free partial retest if left at the test centre
  16. #16
You pay for a partial re-test, under certain circumstances.
