Blown headgasket

My headgasket blew last night and im wondering what is involved in replacing it and does the head have to be skimmed?
If it does where can i get it done? and how much does it usually cost?

I was wondering if anyone on the internet realizes about the existence of a search, and what it involves. I think it costs nothing.

Buy a headgasket kit and a Haynes manual. Basically though its head off, replace gasket, head back on

There are a number of tools you will need though like torque wrench, angle gauge, et14 socket for the head bolts, which aren't in your average tool kit

Should get it skimmed even if very minimal to clean the mating surface and get it checked for straightness, especially if it overheated

Check local garages for somewhere they recommend, that's what I did. Cost about £30

your looking at less than 200 quid if its 8valve mate. more if 16v. at a garage

    as above thats spot on.

head pressure tested and checked for warping is a must to. it cost me 50 quid for skim aswell as pressure testing.

not that hard to do if your fairly nifty with a spanner.

did mine, all i did was take the head to engineering place, new head gasket, cambelt, head bolts etc. also i replaced my water pump slightly high miles on my motor. but these can be a basterd to get out - was stuck solid.
