Wing mirror caps - Wanted - D/S EKQD Wicked Red genuine used

  1. #1
    Hi guys,

Might seem a rather trivial request but it is incredibly frustrating trying to find the correct part.

I broke my wing mirror last week and at the moment it looks utterly crap stuck on with duct tape flapping about over bumps and in the wind. Ordered a new (used) one today but it comes with the wrong colour cover. I have the old red one but it's damaged and I'm not a fan of/expert at repainting so I was after, what I thought would be, a simple replacement cover.

All I need to do is get hold of an unblemished used or not (but genuine), painted in Wicked Red, wing mirror cap for the drivers side of the clip type (not glued on) so I can push it in when the new mirror comes. Sorted...

Problem is finding the part. So my question is does anyone have one? Exhausted all the eBay and part finder website channels to the max over the last couple of days. Not a fan of driving round wasting petrol going to many scrappys either.

Is there a forum for such requests? Any tips would be appreciated.

    Many thanks in advance.

    Cheers,

    Michael.

I had trouble finding a set too mate but tbh it's a lot easier to just get some primer, paint and lacquer and do it yourself, you'll be lucky to find some exactly in wicked red, go onto the FAQ sticky on this forum section, grab the paint code and get yourself to a body shop or even a halfords and get it mixed, i got Mango (KHN) from Halfords and surprisingly it was a perfect match and got 500ml for £13.99, so i've got enoguh left over to do my grill too.

    Hi Karlb1,

After enquiring at Citroen for the part (which is £26 unpainted) he got the official Citroen Wicked Red paint and clear lacquer.

I've made a few more enquiries today but I reckon I'm gonna end up having to paint it, unless I want a blank mirror until I find one. It shouldn't really matter as the rest of the bodywork can never be called immaculate (thanks to previous owners)!

Here is the cover at the minute (ignore the bottom part of the pic):

Not too bad, but it will clearly get worse. The result of duct tape.

I am always worried that painting stuff yourself will result in a far worse quality than the original painted part. How to start? Will I need a primer too? Can't work out if its pulled off the paint as well or just the lacquer. Guessing as the primer is normally grey all I need to do is re-lacquer?

I know it's sooooo trivial but it's so frustrating!

    Cheers in advance,

    Michael.

There is, you just havent earned the right to it yet. (lol sounds harsh)

Either find one in the same colour as the original one, or sort that one out

Right, thought it was something like that.

Trying to find one is proving difficult so my question was how do I go about properly repainting it? I am a total novice.

Sand it down with wet and dry

light coat of primer, wait for it to dry (couple hours in the sun)
    light sand and primer again

Paint, wait for it to dry, light sand and paint again, repeat until your happy with the finish, nice and smooth, no flat/darker spots

Lacquer - nice even coat all over

    Job done

how many coats of primer / paint is up to you, just light sanding between each coat to give a smoother finish

on average 2 to 3 coats is plenty

    Thanks Dano

Forgot the process was that lengthy.

Knowing me I'd cock up somewhere and it would look like a**e. Think I'll wait for a few replies from scrapyards before I attempt anything. Got the wing mirror today but it's gonna look stupid with a silver cap on it

I'll let you know how I solve this seemingly so simple and trivial problem - the wonders of owning a car.

    Many thanks again all.

    Cheers,

    Michael.

It's easy to re-spray stuff mate, get some ultra-fine wet or dry papaer (I used 1200 grit) then sand it all evenly until the colour's disturbed (starts to go grey in most cases).
After that get some plastic primer (Halfords is fine) and give light coats over the cap (I do 3-4, try and do LIGHT coats so you don't get drips or runs). Sand the primer lightly between each coat after it's touch dry (usually about 20 mins)
Leave the caps about 20-24 hours to cure, then you're ready to paint, and it's the same process. Then after that do the same with the lacquer (don't sand it between coats) and then leave it a few hours and pop them on your car

Haha, well it shouldn't bother me, looking at most of the rest of the car (all thanks to previous owners ), and I know it sounds sad me being so concerned lol but I just couldn't believe how difficult it is trying to find such a simple part!

    I'll get over it.

Brilliant. Thanks for the tips guys. I assume it's the same for metals?

have you considered gloss black caps?

they would go nicely with the red, and wouldnt need to be a "Colour match" as black goes with everything
  14. #14
Yeah it'll be the same for metals, except you might need a different primer.

Hmm, not a bad idea, but I do quite like the wicked red Can't really even begin to afford modding it yet - there's so much on the bodywork that needs replacing anyway. I've only added to it recently.
