Stripped Thread

I took one of my back wheels off today and when i tried to refit it, one of the bolts wouldnt tighten up, just kept turning, I tried another bolt in it and it didnt make a difference , so im guessing ive sheered off one of the wheel stud thread in the hub?

Will it be safe to drive with 3 wheel bolts only?

yes its safe, i ran on 3 studs for months when i snapped 1.
also, some pugs/citroens only have 3 studs

if youve stripped the thread in the hub you will be able to see a fucked thread in the hole. if you get a m12x1(i think thats the thread) tap and run it down the hole may be able to save it if not try longer nuts or a replacement hub.

when i took the bolt back out it had several coils of metal round it so im guessin that was the thread from the hub.

Yes it looks like you`ve stripped the thread you may be able save it by re-tapping the thread depends on how bad it is.

try to tap the hole again and even if you get a slight thread in there use that hole for a locking wheel bolt and the other 3 to the correct torque setting. You need 4 wheel bolts on each wheel for the mot or the car will fail.

The bolt stays in tight enough for it to not move about - finger tight
But then when you get the wrench on it it just keeps spinning, but its tight enough not to fall out when driving - But its not really putting any pressure on the wheel.

should be fine with 3 bolts holding the wheel on the only other way around it is to get a new hub or slap some thread lock on the bolt and make do with the 3 you have but make sure you have the locking bolt in the nackerd thread.

You should watch out that the other three are ok as well same happened with one of my old cars and the other bolts freed themselves off within a day.

Why the locking bolt in the nackerd thread ? - I dont even have any locking bolts on :\ lol.
