Help me solve my metal clanging noise?

  1. #1
As some of you know when I go over bumps recently i'm getting a metal clanging, banging, tinging, whatever you want to call it type sound, like something metal is moving and hitting against something.

I have tried the usual ARB end plates and tightenign the ARB which didn't solve it so I have removed the ARB and end plates, taped up the holes and gone for a drive, the noise is still there.

My axle is a recon one under 2 years ago and my mechanic says its perfectly fine.

My exhaust is a powerflow backbox and a standard centre section with the silencer(s) removed and straight pipe welded in. The powerflow backbox makes the centre pipe sit quite high up but i've removed the heatshield and can't seem to make anythign touch to replicate the sound myself.

Does anyone have any idea what the problem could be, i'm thinking my exhaust but like I say I can't replicate the sound, or maybe an engine mount is knackered causing the engine to move the exhaust and hit something?

Any ideas please as it's really confusing and irritating me...

Have a look under your car and see if there are any scrape marks on your exhaust system, get a mate to go with you for a drive and when you get near a bump, let him get out and watch you go over it, looking under the car.

There was some scrape marks where the hanger for the center section had rubbed the underside of the car...so i put some hose over the top, I thought this may have still been a problem so I chopped the edge of the hanger off, which still hasn't worked

And i've let my mum drive it while I watch but its a bit difficult to see anything really

    Thanks mate

Mines the same, haven't tightened the rear ARB as the thread is busted but I don't think its that any way.

My bushes are fine so can only assume is a shock as it only does it on the drivers side
    Fucking french cars!!

i had this on my mk1 vtr it turned out to be one of the top plates on the suspension just above the spring i was told this was quite common and it can be welded back into place

Hmm, I don't really have a creaking noise, only like a noise when the handbrake isn't biting fully. Yeh I don't have the spare or cage in either :/ I've also taken the little screw in bracket out and put a dewiper bung through the hole.

Whats up with the thread mate? Mine was rounding a bit with a bolt so I retapped the thread to the same size and tightened it so the bolt snapped, the noise was still there.

It may be the shock you know, mine sounds like the drivers side although I was told it had had new shocks when it was lowered, and it doesn't feel overly bouncy etc over bumps?

A wheel bearing, could that be the problem? And how would I check?

I'm guessing you mean at the front mate as theres no springs at the back? So if i take off the front wheel and look up with a torch i'll see if anythings wrong? TBH it deffo sounds to come from the back though?

    Thanks for the help people

i have the same problem 2 if i tighten the rear arb across and retighten end plate it makes it quieter for a hour or so and then it gradually goes back 2 how it was before is it just the end plate what needs changing?

Forgot to update this people, I think it was my exhaust in the end, not 100% sure as I replaced the arb bushes at the same time, but driving without them in the noise was still there so must of been the exhaust.

Basically the exhaust was knocking at the mid section I think, so I chopped the mount down a bit and put a cable tie on it to keep the rubber hanger from moving, since then its stopped
