had clutch changed about a month ago now. and ever since iv heard this kind of rattling. if i leave the car in idle i hear it but when i put the clutch down it stops. took it back to garage today to let him have a listen and he says its the gear box.

#2Clutch release bearing mate
, Im changing mine this weekend!
-
#3yeah thats what i thought it was. because thats what went wrong in the first place. the whole reason i got a new clutch. i reckon i will take it to another garage and see what they say
-
#4I hope it is the release bearing as mine is rattling when i have the clutch up but when its down the noise goes!
-
#5lol the guy said if it was the clutch it would be the opposite way? so clutch down you will hear the noise and clutch up you wont....
-
#9Im on my 3rd gearbox in about a year so its down to personal experience. I had the exact same problem as you - turned out to be a dodgy input shaft bearing which is common on MA boxes due to have plastic bearings. Also, why would a brand new CRB go in a month? what brand did you fit?
-
#10im not to sure. i just left it for the garage to sort out. so i asume its another standard saxo one. its fine when im changing through the gears no trouble at all. it just makes a noise in idleQuote:Im on my 3rd gearbox in about a year so its down to personal experience. #11O mannnn just bought a release bearing for this, Ye same only makes the noise when idle fine when changing gears, I got a garage fitting the release bearing for £50 shall i keep my money or let them do it to see if that is the problem?

#12Just asked my mate a vauxhall (he works there) and he said my problem is clutch release bearing :/, Should i get it done?
-
#13With respect you might want to stop believing everything you hear/are told. Not being funny at all by the way mate.Quote:Just asked my mate a vauxhall (he works there) and he said my problem is clutch release bearing :/, Should i get it done?
If the clutch pedal is up then the engine is driving the gearbox internals (obviously is in gear then also the road wheels) and the release bearing is not doing anything so the noise is more probably the input shaft bearing on the box itself.
The release bearing can rattle with the clutch up or down depending on how it is worn though hence these problems can be tricky to identify. Generally when a release bearing is dying the noise is worse when it is actually under load pressing against the clutch diaphragm (ie clutch pedal down).
Gearbox rattle tends to be louder and will quiten down if you hold the revs around 1200rpm upwards - not 100% proof of GB bearing though but can be an indicator.
If you get clutch changed always do the release bearing as well otherwise it's false economy - they don't last long and IMO are not really up to the job and are quite weak when compared to other makes like ford or vauxhall for example. -
#14What should i do then i have already bought the release bearing and waiting at home to be fitted will cost me £50 to get fitted, Is there any chance at all it could be the release bearing? I got told of here aswell more than one person said it will be the release bearingQuote:With respect you might want to stop believing everything you hear/are told.
