Important! : Wheel bearing ? (Update with Good video of problem please have a look at 1st post)

I have had 2 people wack there head out my window and listen to this whistle I have, both people said it was definately coming from my wheel.
Its more noticable when doing over 15mph ish and comes on after about 20 minutes driving.

Ive had a few mechanics tell me its a strange noise for a wheel bearing and others people telling me it IS the bearing.

I am looking for the parts id need to have it done, What exactly is it I will need doing, as I hear people talking about Hub etc, and i have seen some wheel bearing kits about ?

Its so annoying that its at the stage where ill just change the bearing as process of elimination lol.

    - check it out ! I sprayed some brake cleaner while it was spinning to see if noise was brake related but it remained the same so i think its the bearing or drive shaft... cant really tell

buy a wheel bearing in your local motor factors bring it to a mechanic and get it pressed in. save yourslef alot of money if you whip the strut out yourself. £22 for wheel bearing and £5 max. to get it pressed

is taking the strut out a fairly easy job ?
    Thanks by the way

its a peice of piss mate, whip the wheel off, undo the big hub nut, The pinch bolt behind it on the wishbone, then the brake caliper, then track rod end then the 3 nuts at the top in the engine bay. job done.

Never heard a wheel bearing whistle but I did have a wing mirror that whistled. Try folding them in then going for a drive. To check wheel bearing jack it up and spin the wheel, listen for noise and roughness, then grab top and bottom and side to side - feel for play

yep as your man said there position hands on wheel at 3 nd 9 oclock, 12 and 6 oclock and check for play also remember that the drive shaft could slip out of the gearbox so you cud hit the centre of the wheel hub to loosen it a little.

easy jobe whip the wheel off and you can pretty much see everything that needs done

ok thanks ill have a look into it. I am 90 per cent sure its a wheel bearing. Some people say its strange but i was having a conversation with my gf's cousin the other day and he had the same problem which turned out to be a wb. Its definately not the mirror mate.

A wheel bearing will not whistle and will make the noise all the time, not just after 20ish minutes of driving. Sounds like your sniffing up the wrong track mate.

see, You say that mate but then i have someone else tell me that they had the same problem, changed the bearing and it went.

    This is what confuses me.

Could it be a drive shaft then ? My mate and my GF are 99 per cent sure its coming from the passenger front wheel. I dont know what else it could be, A mate rekons it could be because the bearings area heating up or something, Someone commented on a " dry bearing " before, But i dont know. I'm just getting really Pissed off with this noise. Quite unbearable once it really kicks in.

The noise goes up in pitch as i move quicker and lower in pitch as i slow down, It doesnt disappear when i press the break either (I have a seperate squal for the brakes which i will deal with another time lol)

I have a history of squeaks and squeals:

    Exhaust Flange - fixed
Breaks squealing driverside front wheel - when stopping an turning right - ongoing
Whistle from wheel bearing or whatever it is - ongoing
Pc monitor - Had a dodgy transistor or something - started whistling LOL i kid you not !

    Annoying

Tell you what, I have a annoying Whistle coming from passenger side wheel swell and it's been bugging me, I thought it may be my disc and pads starting to squeak when they warm up, I cleaned the carriers and pads up yesterday at work and the noise isn't as bad anymore, also maybe your gearbox is making noise as it's behind the passenger front wheel

sounds more like the shaft mate a wheel bearing is more of a humming noise, and will do it a over certian speeds or all the time. check to see if the c.v boots are on correctly could be the joint has run dry.

check video at the top peeps !

No tbh... but the brakes are not old at all... and it was happening before i changed the discs n pads.... kinda seemed to set in after a long drive back from skegness. I thought it was brakes, changed everything, problem remains.

that fair anoth its one of the process(sp) of alimination(sp) things but with out spending loads of money on the problem try putting a screw driver to the hub and then on gear box and listen on the rubber end to see which sounds clearer but more than likely is a wheel bearing

thanks mate. Much appreciated. Anyone else had this noise before then ?
  19. #19
I have the exact same noise on the same wheel buddy, i cleaned my carriers and copper eased ends of the pads and wound the piston back (nothing seized), but noticed i still hear that noise, i can only think its gearbox whine..
  20. #20
let me know if you find the problem mate
  21. #21
i really think its related to the wheel bearing. Its like its coming from the hub. I might change the wheel bearing, see what happens as its the cheaper option. If not ill attack the drive shafts.

got the same sort of noise mate! going to need to get it sorted in the next few weeks. let us know how you get on
