Cam covers pissing oil :(

  1. #1
    Hello

I had a slight leak from the cam covers so I decided to remove and reseal them.

Everything was fine for a few days and I drove about 40 miles to a mates and found the covers are pissing oil. There is a small puddle under the car

I did it using gasket sealant from halfords and left it 8 hours to harden.

I need to drive home later, if I take it slowly is there anything major that could go wrong?

I have enough oil in the car but am worried that the engine is caked in oil and more may leak

    Cheers

top oil up before you leave, check it en-route if needs be,top up as needed. When you're faced with S covers that have been on and off a few times the seals get too compressed as there are small raised sections on the covers to prevent over tightening, its a bit of a bodge but in the past,to save the expense of buying new covers, i have carefully ground the raised sections of prior to resealing

Thanks, just hoping it doesn't leak onto the belt

this happened to me when i put my re sprayed covers on took them off and put a thicker layer of gasket sealant on and its been fine ever since

As above, take the covers off, file the raised bits off, bead of sealant all the way round and put them back on without having to move them about.

I've always found wynns black gasket maker okay. Used it for years... you can get it in a self dispensing can, let squeeze the lever and off you go.

i had a similar problem this week i found like with paintwork its all in the prep making sure all the surfaces are smooth and clean before you start all it takes is a tiny peice of old rubber or sealant and its game over

    Managed to limp home

Tried to remove the covers and one of the fcuking bolts has rounded so I can't get it out

Gonna order a new set of cover bolts from Ebay and just get a new set of J4 covers
Gotta get a garage to get the bolt out

Think Im pissing in the wind with sealant

    Cheers

Don't get a garage to get the bolt out, do it yourself and save money

Just get a old t30 torx bit and hammer that into the head of the bolt, then undo it with the ratchet, it's pretty easy to do mate

Make sure you press down aswell on the ratchet, when you un-do the bolt as that'll add more pressure onto it to un-do

let me know how you get on mate
