is this a coil pack problem??

   i recently brought a 106 GTI and the chap selling it thought it was a non runner. but as soon as i got it home i gave it a try for good ol sakes and with a bit of throttle and persistence she fired up but was missfireing and had to keep the revs up or would cut out. has anyone else experianced this??

   Talk about jump to conclusions by saying head gasket. Start with coilpack.

   yeah i had the same issue with my saxo, replaced coil pack and plugs and it was fine. Also it was flooding itself so try empty it before starting up again.

   It could be. but that isnt the correct way to diagnose a problem. Thats like someone saying the tracking is out on the car, and you saying the shell is twisted. So they buy a new shell and then find out they just needed new tracking rods.

   yeah was thinking bot picking up a coil pack and plugs and see what happens. and dont know bout the EML as mate started it and i had to keep it running with the throttle boddies holding a bit of throttle on. but will have a look. but got to get a new starter motor now as that gave up when tried starting it again lol

    compression test would be first thing to do, and before anyone says i'm jumping to conclusions, it sounds like head gasket has gone between 2 cylinders, hence the oil in the intake and misfiring, based on experience of seeing the same symptoms on plenty of S and GTi engines. Wouldn't overheat or mix oil/water with this type of failure either.

    I'm sorry I missed the oil bit, donno how I read it 3 times lol.
    
    I see the theory in the head gasket now.
    
    However, I'd still check plugs and coil pack, if you have a Compression tester handy yourself then do that while you have the plugs out, if not make sure it's not plugs or Coil pack before you go paying for a Test to be done.

    sorry biker, i'd just read of another guy who had similar probs and had oil in the inlet...doh!
    Always worth checking the basics before getting to involved but as you say, if a compression tester is to hand,whilst plugs are out, get it done. Out of interest, when it cranks over on the starter, is it an even sound or do's it spin over quicker then normal? If its not an even sound from the starter,its a good sign a couple of cylinders are loosing compression.

    And yeh, this is true, you'll know the sound when you hear it, you might even hear a puffing sound.
