It can be hard to distinguish whether the input shaft bearing is at fault or the thrust bearing is without removing the gearbox and checking.

"Surely the bearing would make a whining noise if I depressed the clutch?" - Not always the case.

Usually its the thrust bearing that is the problem, as this is a more consumable part. However, you say the sound goes away once warmed up which could indicate the input shaft bearing.

Without removing the gearbox it will be hard to determin. If the price of gearboxes are similar to saxo's on your car then either way it will cost around £110 for the part (gearbox or clutch kit) if its the gearbox then replace the thrust bearing for peace of mind and check the clutch plate too.

I would buy a new clutch kit as its always advisable to replace the clutch while the gearbox is off. If it is your clutch that is the problem then you have the parts to hand. If not then get a new gearbox and fit your clutch kit anyway to prevent anymore problems in the future.

Can't really advise anymore than that im afraid so its just a case of removing the box to find out for definate!

I agree its the clutch then.

For the speedo to do that would suggest either a faulty sensor, or incorrect volts getting to or from the sensor.
