Lamdba Sensor Replacement VTS

  1. #1
Can anyone point me towards a guide of how to replacement this sensor on my 2001 VTS?

Also how do i tell that if i need a front or rear one? Its come up on a diagnostics test when in the garage because my ecu light has come on but havent got enough money to pay them to do it.

    Cheers

Very easy to replace. All you need is a 22mm spanner.
But first of all are you 100% sure it's the lambda that's failed? I'm guessing that the car is running okay (like not eating fuel and performance hasn't disappeared or anything) otherwise you wouldn't have taken it in a garage. If it's running okay then the chances are the lamdba further back is faulty... this is what determines if the CAT is working okay. And if the CAT isn't working okay, the ECU usually senses this as a lambda fault when it isn't.

is your car decatted? does it have 2 lambdas?

if yes to both then your car is fine just your decat is causing your light to go on

    Thanks for replies:

Umm it shouldnt be the that the cat has failed or failing as this was replaced about a year ago, and i havent lost any power, but i do have a lumpy idle sometimes that is slowly getting worse, could this be related?

I havent looked to see if it has got two sensors as im not 100% sure where i should be looking and no its not de-catted, so not sure what to replace.

No problem. Not sure on the lumpy idle, it's more likely to be coolant temp sensor related! We'll assume the rear lambda is at fault then. To remove the rear lambda, jack up your car at the front on the front. The exhaust section underneath will have three boxes - From the exhaust tip at the back you have the rear silencer, the mid box and the catalyst. The rear lambda is located between the mid box and the catalyst (much closer to the catalyst though). Use a 22mm spanner to loosen the lambda, because of the wire you don't want to attempt to remove it completely from it's hole as you'll twist the wires. So trace the wire from the lambda towards a large blue clip. Pull the red tab (I think) in stages at each stage the clip will release a bit. Once it's completely apart you can loosen and withdraw the lambda from the lambda hole.

Replacement is the same as removal just in reverse.

I would find out what the fault code is before buying any new sensors.

OK, ill have a look and if i get stuck ill get back on here. Thanks for the tutorial!

Err the print out from the garage says:

    X431 DIAG report LAUNCH
    --------------------------------
    SMARTBOX: 980642308800
    --------------------------------
    Total Codes: 001
    CODE001:
    P0420 Catalyst System
    Efficiency System
    Threshold Bank 1

I was told this mean the Lambda sensor but didnt say which one.
