Back Axle - Common?

  1. #1
Basically my car failed it's MOT today due to the back axle being shot, and other stuff related to it, I've been quoted £350 for a replacement part and for it to be fitted and sorting everything else out.

My question is, how common are the axles going on lowered Saxo's?
I don't want to be buying a new axle every year due to them not being able to handle being lowered..?!

    Cheers all

They go on lowered aswell as standard cars. Poor design. A reconditioned one will last another 10 years easily. How old is your car = how old the axle is.

where are they getting the axle refurbished?

Refurb will last a while usually.
All depends how low it is - lower means more stress so don't last as long.

I did 3 second hand ones (not refurb'd) in 2 years, then the one that's on now has been on another 2...

Ahh yeah that makes sense how you put it like that
I'm not sure if I'm honest, is it worth me asking?

It was down about 50mm I think, it was slightly tucking the rear tyres in the arches, just.

I'm considering just selling up tbh, I'm only a student and work part-time, and I feel that there's just too much to do to the Sax for me to warrant keeping it.

Searh on here mate, soooo many threads about busted beams/axels

Better off getting a refurb but till cost you more (think about £350) but its guaranteed for 12 months.

Could go 2nd hand but there is the risk of getting a knackered one or one that could break in a few weeks/months.

Its not so much about how low the beam is, but when lowered if the seals have been fitted correctly.

It is worth asking where they are getting it refurbished. If its a reputable place then thats a good price for including fitting.

Yeah I've heard about it but didn't think it was such a big problem, I thought it was one of those 'oh it won't happen to me' type of problems

Ah well, it's gonna be done so it can be safely driven on the roads again.

Ah right, is it easier to lower correctly when the axle's off the car? As obviously I'll need the axle lowered again to match the front of the car.

Yeah I'll ask him when I go back to get it all done and arrange payment etc.

Whoever refurbishes the beam can set the height to what you want. It dosent make any difference whether its on the car or not, its just people that dont have the no how or think about having the seal seated properly.

Ah right, cheers mate, I'll make sure to ask and have them to lower it so it's level and to ensure the seals done all properly
I'm sure it'll have a warranty thing on anyways so it should be alright
