Last problem and then the scrapyard beckons for my vtr

  1. #1
right this is the last one im bothering to look into. my car has developed a whining noise, i have a new clutch on, and a used gearbox which were put on 2 days ago and i have had 2 days of bliss driving around. now when i dont touch the accelerator the engine is making a very high pitched whine, on the right side of the cylinder block, sounds like just above the gearbox but not the gearbox, doesnt matter if the clutch is in or our, if im in neutral or driving, if i havent got my foot slightly on the accelerator this whine appears. can anyone help? thanks
  2. #2
It could be the power steering pump? Turn the wheel while the engine is running and see if the whine changes.
  3. #3
i thought that as my power steering cut out earlier and now its working again, BUT it doesnt make any kind of noise when i move the steering wheel . only when im not touching the accelerator

split idle control pipe? actually a whistling noise? or a metallic whine?
  5. #5
kind of whistling actually. its really high pitched. im sitting in traffic with it idling having to put my foot on the pedal to get at least 0.1% higher than my natural idle..
  6. #6
sounds like a split pipe then mate, have a nose around the airbox area, and the pipe that runs to the idle control, either on the left side of the inlet manifold or behind the engine!

scratch that, its actually metallic noise, i just went out and started it up., definalty something metal. like i said my power steering cut out earlier, its back on now, and i had this light flashing at me, an upside down 7? it flashed for 10 seconds and disappeared. connected do you think?
  8. #8
with my ear to the engine it sounds like its coming from the exhaust manifold area? its wierd!!!
  9. #9
you sure its not the alternator belt lol

    try get a video
  10. #10
    Yeh get a Video.

I think it's a split pipe also but I wana hear it please?
  11. #11

    sorry this is it
  14. #14
Well, your Tappets sound loose lol.

But after hearing that I'm not sure it's a pipe, are you sure that Thrust Bearing is alright?
  15. #15
the thrust bearing and clutch are brand new on . thats what i originally thought.
  16. #16
The bit when it gets really loud sounds like metal on metal, Hmm, is it your power steering Pump?

Use a screw driver and see where it's coming from
  17. #17
its got a bit worse now, its always as soon as you take your foot off the accelerator it literally starts then dies down the lower the revs get. GAR!!!
  18. #18
because this video was me in neutral and parked up it couldnt be something to do with the gearbox or clutch could it? i mean im not using them as it is just parked up with the pedal pushed in??? im getting desperate here lol
  19. #19
Does it do it when you're in gear?
  20. #20
does it when in gear and out of gear. the only constant thing is it happens when i take my foot off the accelerator.
  21. #21
Does it do it when you take your foot off at higher revs?

Rev to 4k and take it off, does it do it then or only at low revs?
  22. #22
lol fecking noise, if i rev higher and they drop down the noise comes back at about the same time as when i give it a quick push, theres a point where if i rev the car and release a tiny bit but then keep it steady the noise stays there until i release the pedal more. and it doesnt do it for the first 5 minutes in the morning, only when the cars warming up
  23. #23
    Alternator belt?

Not sure what side it is on a VTR so just a guess really
  24. #24
my alternator belt isnt in great condition but the noise seems to be come from just up from there, not on the belt or alternator. more towards the actual engine,
  25. #25
It's on the other side anyway lol.

From what you said then, it does sound like an air leak, all I can say is check all the Vacuum hoses and ICV pipe...
  26. #26
what ive said sounds like its got nothing to do with the gearbox though doesnt it, i mean it doesnt seem to be involved does it?>
  27. #27
Not really, I can't do anything for you, I say check the hoses and pipes, I'm sure you're not stupid you'll know when one's leaking lol.
  28. #28
lol thanks for all the help! i think i might have come up with the answer, my power steering cut out when i went to start the car earlier, so i pulled in to b+q carpark and with the engine still running i hit the power steering pump with the palm of my hand and the engine lost a bit of power for a split second and low and behold the power steering is back on AND the noise has disappeared for the 10 mile drive home even though it was doing it all morning before the punch, so im guessing my pump is knackered/ on the way out.
  29. #29
    Hahaaa I was right before!

    change it
  30. #30
yeh mate. it just didnt click in my mind really i mean there was no noise difference when i moved the steering wheel. i didnt think a push of the accelerator would have made a difference to power steering
  31. #31
The extra power going to the pump will make it pump faster, so yeh it will lol.
  32. #32
i appreciate all your help mate. god send to have somebody to talk to about it!!!
  33. #33
    You're welcome mate

    Always here to help
