clutch or powersteering?

  1. #1
Ive just had my gearbox and clutch replaced around 3 weeks ago, linkages need readjusting ive just not got the cash at the moment because the sax has cleaned me out..

Every now and then i get what seems to be a rubbing/whining kind of noise, its not constant but really annoying..

It seems to go if i turn right or depress the clutch.. i aint got a clue whats causing it, ive looked up the car and cant see anything rubbing, ive tried adjusting the clutch slightly but the problem is still there..

as i say, its not constantly there, its just every now and again.. any ideas what it could be?

i have similar, i changed gearbox and clutch 3 days ago and now my car is whining, its only when i am idleing though, as soon as i press the accelerator it disappears, my power steering cut out yesterday twice aswell, but then came back on but noise doesnt change when when i move the wheel! so if you get an answer could you let me know? thanks

its doing my head in, my problem is exactly the same as you described, i assumed it stopped when i was turning, but then realised its becasue i was normally accelerating which obviously stopped the noise..

I adjusted the clutch again this evening, or atleast i tightened the nut at the end of the clutch cable and the problem still pursists, i thought it might of been powersteering as it died on me a little while ago, but when i gave it full lock to turn around it came back again and seems to have been fine since.
For good measure i gave the old power steering pump abit of a smack with a hammer to see if that also killed the problem but its done nothing.

Ive got the car going in tomorrow at a mates guarage to pull the chassis or what ever the problem is back out after abit of a bump with a kurb so ill ask him while im down there.. if i come to find its the clutch it'll be going back to guarage where they fitted my gearbox and a supposedly new clutch and they will be correcting the problem free of charge as far as im concerned.

Yeah no problem, hopefully its something simple, becasue if the guarage that fitted my clutch and box try charging me ill either just scrap the car or stick it through there office lol.

Was the noise there before the gearbox/clutch replacement?, Sounds like release bearing, seeing as you say it disappears when you push the clutch pedal down

nope definately wasnt there before new box and clutch was put in, only noise i had before was a grindign sound where old box was knackered

if its release bearing then how you think i stand having it sorted? becasue i dont paticually want to be paying out for labour due to shoddy fitting or what ever

its a 2nd hand box with around 53k on it from a VTS, the clutch is supposedly brand new

Im kinda wondering if he just charged me for new clutch and just bunged the old one in..

yeh mine was a 1.1 gearbox froma 53 plate with 60k miles on it, and mine was a brand new clutch. arghhhhhh

i think i have figured out my problem, even thought noise wasnt changing when i turned my wteering wheel my power steering cut out this morning, so with the engine running i literally tapped the steering pump with the palm of my hand and low and behold the pump started working again and the noise has disappeared.. i dont know why it failed all of a sudden when i changed my gearbox and clutch but it has, bad luck i guess but at least i know the problem now. hope this helps

Well that may be my issue also then as i say it did die a while ago but then started working again..

I was planning on taking my sax to the guarage i had box/clutch fitted at today to get them to check over there work, but unfortuantely having my other issues fixed at a mate guarage is taking longer then expected so i probably wont make it down there today..

I might just try taking the relay out to kill the powersteering pump when i pick it up and see if the noise continues then, depending on what the situation is i should have narrowed down out the 2 which is the problem.. hopefully...

Chance will be a fine thing lol, already cleaned my bank account out!

well to have it corrected by a proper guarage i was quoted 720quid, my mate does complete crash repairs and said he'd do it for 40quid so was happy with that.. been booked in for last week or so, dropped it off a 8.30am just went down there to pick it up and apparently they didnt have time... there only next free day is 4 weeks away...

now EML is on, car is running rough as fuck, asthough its missfiring, turned car off and restarted EML is still on but running better...

This sax is just a money sink at the moment.. should probably get rid and get another but.. i doubt id get much back on it compaired to amount ive spent on the bloody thing already

thats it, i bought mine 2 weeks ago, took it for a small test drive was fine, next day clutch was slipping, thought great so got to the clutch and realised it was LAGGED in oil. so i had one look at the gearbox and it was FOOKED. bearings were shot. so bought another gearbox (this was after 1 week) , got it all connected up and took it for a test drive and there was a grinding noise in the front wheel, warped disc. ffs i was getting pissed, driving it down the bypass BAM the f-ing power steering cut out lol.

someone suggested to me it might be warped discs, but i only had them replaced about a month of two ago so doubtful its that.. ive just taken car for a quick spin (forgot to disconnect relay from powersteering though) EML is still on but no noises other then the crunch into 2nd which i think is because the guarage who fitted my box didnt sort linkages out and i cant get under it to do it myself..

Popped in shop and came back out and EML is now off and only noise im getting is a very slight whining/grating sound until i press the clutch in then it goes quiet, so a wild stab in the dark would suggest its definately the clutch that is having issues or incorrectly fitted or just a manufacture defect.

Next day off ill be taking it to the guarage that supplied the clutch, and fitted my box. since they fitted it surely i cant be charged for it to be sorted out properly? depending on how things go with that, ill just replace the powersteering unit aswell for piece of mind..

Then to crack on with the other list of things that keep creaping up.. or just get it to best i can and flog it.. shame really becasue its a alright little sax, and the sound that comes from her has got to be 1 of a kind..

but if she does go.. i got to find another 2 VTR wheels since it aint going with the wheels i just bought, and 2 VTR standards were stolen from me bloody garden lol

Well, after finishing slightly early today i decided to pop down to guarage to see if they can resolve my issue..

according to who ever it was i spoke to, the syncro is fucking in this so called "perfectly working" box.. so what a complete waste of fucking money..

350quid pissed down a drain (just for box/clutch to be fitted - not to mention everything else)and to be honest ive absolutely had it with this sax now, nothing but a money sink, and i aint going to get fuck all back on the bastard thing now unless i strip it which also isnt possible becasue i got no where to put the damn thing..

what sort of price would i be expecting for a fucked 8 year old vtr then anyone?

sorry mate, ddint want to say the gearbox but it sounded like it. hope all end well buddy. saxos are liek pissing doen the drain

ohh, my mate had a problem like this, but his turned out to be thrust washers when ever he turned sharply or pressed the clutch

Im still not entirely sure to be honest.. i still think its linkages and possibly powersteering whine..

decided im most likely going to rid myself of the sax, or should i say cars altogether, theres a few nice bikes around my way going for reasonable prices so might go down that road..

If i dont do the bike thing then i guess ill still leave the sax scene since i am getting on abit now and well i have two young boys and the sax isnt exactly practicle.

Just means selling it up and trying to make something on it.
