You won't save any weight by losing the sunroof. You would need to weld in a sheet of metal to blank it off, anything strong enough for the job would either weigh the same or more than the glass...

Even with all the frame sturcture? seems like a real heavy unit, Its really annoying me lol cheers though lads!

you would save weight, i cant say exactly how much though, one of the track lads im sure would be able to say.

A few people on here have just blanked it off with sheet metal/aluminium or Carbon fibre..

Cut a shape slightly larger than the sunroof, sealed it and the riveted it.
May not be the neatest of ways..but does the job.
Could always make a mould of the shape of the sunroof and Fibreglass an insert to fit.

This is probably the best option if you want it to look smooth and straight out the factory, but if you want a sort of track look, seal and rivet it. Check JoshB progress thread as his latest car has been riveted and it looks pretty cool!

I have an open scandal that im in the middle of sorting for mot. Plan to get rid of the huge hole in the roof with the roof skin from a 106 welded in along the gutters then smooth over the gutters to save on grinding time etc. Got some arches to weld and under the ecu tray first, not to mention the clutch and afew other bits. Should get off here and go do some work really.

I got a few Carbon Fibre ones made up, with a thicker bit in the middle to keep it stiff. The racers cut out that bit of metal that drops down as well as none of it is structural, mine is still in there.
The rigidity is held by the windscreen and other bits. You remove about 7kgs before adding the replacement panel. Its bad weight as its high up.
When I sealed mine on I put one line round the underside of the sunroof near the outside edge, then another on the car just round the edge of the hole. That way there were two points of contact, weighted it at the edges and kept checking while it dried- seems to be fine, been on there 3 months now.

Riveting a sheet on can look pretty cool. I saw a picture of one which is a road sign!
