Cold starting issue

I have a saxo diesel that has a cold starting issue. When starting the engine you have to hold the accelerator down after about 15 seconds it will judder as if going to start and it takes about 30 seconds to eventually start. It then misfires and sometimes acts like it might cut out and it has sometimes. When it starts while holding the accelerator down I get a cloud of blue smoke. Once warm the engine will start no problem and there is no smoke at all. Can anyone help me.

Oh forgot to mention I have given it a full service (new oil, oil filter, fuel filter, air filter and glow plugs), it has a new alternator and a new battery. I haven't started it from cold since the service so will let you know if that has changed anything.

After a bit of reading I think it may be an injector fault. Can anyone shed any light on this

Sorry, looking at your bump posts.

I wish I could help. I'll go look in my haynes manual for you

how long before the cooling fan should kick in?

My cooling fan doesn't work could the temp sensor be the source of all my woes??

Valve stem seals usually give blue smoke symptoms on start up.

How long have you left it for the fan to kick in? Remove the fan and connect the wires to a battery to see if it works, might be a burnt out motor, or temp sensor, fuse etc.

about 30 mins idling and the coolant is bubbling out of the expansion tank cap. I have ordered a new one just in case the seal on existing one is shot. I had a leak which i assumed to be from the gear box, I then saw it was on the top running round. I thought I'll have a smell to see what it might be and it was the unmistakable smell of diesel. I couldn't see a leak so i primed the fuel pump with the squidgy bulb. And it was streaming out of the top of where the fuel filter sits. Its a screw type thing with a reverse philips head on the back towards the rear of the bay.

Don't worry about the fan unless the engine is actually over heating... In the three years I had mine I got the temp fan on once and that was after 20 mins on silverstone.

Apparently the raised star bolt is some kind of temperature sensor. Anyone know where i can get a part number for this?

I replied in your thread related to that.

So that's the part number for the sensor that's inside the fuel filter housing then? That thread was about the green plug temp sensor on the side of the block.

The white star shaped thing is what is leaking

hi mate is ther not a relay for the glowplugs mate !!! dont know only looking from 405 it gives the time the glowplugs work for like worrh a look could be wrong again but worth a look

    update on this, I got myself a multimeter and here are the voltages without the engine on;

    Glow plug relay 12V
    Glow plugs 11.5V
Coolant sensor on side of block 8.9V

I also ran a direct 12V to the fan and that works fine.

    Are these voltages alright?

Also an update on the fuel leak there is air bubbles in the fuel lines coming in from the white plug on the left:

As no one in the universe has one on these white plugs is there a way to seal it externally? Anyone know what sealant would be best?
