VTS Fuel Gauge going down FAST!!!

  1. #1
I was coming back from the cinema last night when my petrol light came on... nothing unusual... I was fairly close to the reserve anyway...

but when the light came on... I did about 3 miles and was half way into the reserve... started my car this morning... still the same... drove about 2miles and its almost emptied the tank...

Can anyone shed some light on the problem or am I just being paranoid?

    Thanks guys!! x

p.s. I was driving sensibly... changing at 2k revs

am not sure but my fuel econamy is crap i only get about 200 miles to £40

When was the last service? Does the performance seem to have dropped? Got a fuel leak?
  4. #4
It had a service about 700 miles ago but it also had an MOT test about 4days ago which only failed on rust underneath... no problems with emissions etc...

I dont think there is a fuel leak... I cant seem to smell petrol...

Could it be a sensor or my needle playing up? or something more serious than that?

Its a mark1 saxo VTS, only done 70780miles

    thanks

Yep Also that's with a supersprint 4-2-1 manifold and 2" supersprint exhaust system

People only get rubbush mpg is because they put a raceland or whatever induction kit on and they put there foot down all the time to hear it whistle

Im gonna put £20 in the car later... should put it up to over 1/3 tank... I would usually get 250miles from £40 so I should get 125 roughly...

but I have a really bad feeling im gonna get like 30miles -.-

Nothing is going right with this car so far... only had it 3weeks... :X

Re-set your trip on your dials to 0 and then just drive it normally and then when the light comes on again, have a look on your trip and see how many miles you've done

Could be anything really mate, i had same sort of issue as you before, i changed the coolant temperature sensor and that sorted it for me

Don't trust your fuel gauge in the last quarter of the tank, mine varies a lot, especially if the nose of the car is pointing down or up.

350 miles to £40 in a vts? because standard they are 32mpg..

it costs about £6 for a gallon (4.5 litres), £40 is basically 6.5 gallons isnt it? which means your doing over 58mpg...somewhat unbelievable with your mods..

in my 1.1, which was 42mpg standard, i could get about 150 miles to £30 which was motorway driving and i thought that was good! my vtr will probably do about 110miles 'ish to £30, and i thought that was good too!

My mk2 VTS... from doing 25 miles with the petrol light on, takes about £52-£54 to fill and pretty much 350 miles on a tank, 350 on £40 cant be right surely??????

110 miles to £30? I'm getting about 70-80 miles from a tenner in mine but that is pretty sensible driving
  23. #23
Sorry on topic I find once the needle is in the red (well white if being pedantic) it is hugely inaccurate, I can start a journey on the fuel light and 5 miles later at the end it will be off and the needle will have actually gone up
  24. #24
i might try coolant temp sensor also my fuel gauge is rediculous if you go left u have twice as much fuel than if u go right its not a very steady needle are they all like this.

about that mate, im talking city and motorway driving, with petrol i top up being at 138.9, probably did me about 120-140 miles to be honest from empty, but i never let it go all the way down so used to get about 110 miles lol
