Odd rumbling sound coming from engine?

   Hi!
   
   I'm really not at all good with cars, and so this is kinda my only hope (before I fork out for someone professional to come and actually have a look, and way overcharge me for that...)
   
   Last night I was driving and when I parked up, I noticed an odd sort of rumbling sound. Didn't really assume it would be anything serious as I thought maybe car was just overheating or something. Anyway this morning it's still there, and getting worse when I drive, but if I hit about 40mph the noise appears to go. It sounds as if it's coming from the engine, and is sort of a rumbling that comes in waves, if that makes sense? Rather than constant, it's like a rumble-nothing-rumble-nothing continually.
   
   Being a 17 year old girl, I panicked and don't have a clue what this is to do with. It seems to drive okay despite the noise and I got to college this morning, but I don't know if it's gonna be okay to drive home or not. My Dad would usually be able to have a look (he being far more car savvy than I ) but he's away for a few days, so I either need to pay for someone to come look or hopefully have someone here tell me it's nothing serious and I can leave it till Dad gets back to have a proper look!    Possibly be the tappets, how many miles has the car covered? Got AA/break down cover, if so call them out and play the innocent girl part saying that you thought something was wrong, although be prepared to wait a while.
   
   I waited 2 and a half hours the other day for someone to come and tow me home, not impressed. Guy couldn't have been nicer/chatty more though

   Can't really say without seeing/hearing the noise but i would'nt worry about it too much most probably something simple to fix like you said get your dad to have a look it should be fine for a couple of days until then, in my opinion sometimes its just the weather my saxo seems to run like crap some days then other times it runs like new lol

   How do you mean a rumble noise? If you could explain it better someone may be able to diagnose?
   
   Tappets are more like a tick tick tick noise?
   A rumbling noise sounds a bit like a wheel bearing, but I doubt it would just happen instantaneously, does it sound like an aeroplane overhead?

   Could be the alternator pulley maybe?

   Do you plenty of oil in your engine/no leaks obvious 1`s that is?Rumbling sound could(hope i`m wrong)big ends in your engine.
