Few Query's on a Vtr

  1. #1
Hi just got a saxo vtr phase 2
120k on the clock fsh from Citroen very clean ALL STANDARD
    12 months mot taxed etc
and i really like it however

However few problems i was hoping some of you could shed light on

    1. Rattling noise from exhaust - not blowing at all. Looking underneath couldn't see anything touching, tightened up all clamp nuts
Any common saxo exhaust rattling problem where to look?!!

    2. Wheel bearing i believe its the front one passenger side
how easy to fix, do you have to take suspension out? cheapest place to buy the bits from?

    3. the engine temp always is on around 3/4 then will kick in go to half then raise to 3/4 and repeat that cycle is that normal? Btw i drive mpg not ragging it and the airbox is brand new installed correctley.

If you could help that would be great ta

the exhaust mite be the exhaust mount, the rubber perished, hapend on my corsa and mine fell off, could be worth a look also it could be hiting the rear bumper causing a knocking when driving, the wheel bearing is easy to fix, shouldnt need to drop the suspension, just take the caplaper, disk off, then pull the driveshaft through then u should have access to the bearing, i had to replace the whole hub as the bearing was shaged wouldnt come out and the temp has always been like that with my last 2 saxos but i mite of had the same problem, they are known for overheating tho, if your worried about it just bleed the system and get all the air out, mite have some air in the pipes

    1. baffles may be gone in silencer/cat may be disintegrating, check mounts etc.

    2. wheel bearing 25 quid for parts, half hour to get the strut off and a tenner to your friendly local garage to swap the bearing

    3. bleed coolant system

thanks sound advice exhaust will be the annoying one tho havent looked at manifold yet though and saxo renound for that?
  5. #5
mine rattles ...anoying yes anoying enough to change it .... no

just had a look and there seems to be a considerable gap were the manifold/exhaust joins on the oval type flange

should there be a gap here?
Its tighten by 10mm spring bolts/nuts
so im guessing there should be a bit of a gap?
I checked evferything else held the exhaust up and down will running ~(cold) and isnt catching on anything must be something to do with the exhaust itself

Can you explain that a bt better mate?

Mine when driving around town in jams etc the temp guage will rise just above half way under 3 quarters, the fan will kick in and bring it just under half, and slowly it will make its way back up to over half and the fan will kick in cooling it down. This mainly happens when sat idling, I've changed the coolant once and my heaters blow hot air and everything but I just assumed it was normal for these cars, my old car used to constantly sit below half once warmed up and never move, but I though the VTR was different, am I right?

this probably isnt very helpfull but I don't think it is normal for the temp to keep rising then dropping my vtr sits at just above halfway on the gauge and doesnt often move unless its sad idling for a long time

Ah shit, any idea how to solve this then? The fan doesn't come on much when driving, its just when sat idling or in a traffic jam it does it, my mates 106 does the same or similar?

Right this may sound odd but my temperature gauge used to do this until I changed the coolant temperature sensor. Not the 1 for the gauge(blue 1)but the green 1 for the ecu. Before anyone says I got it wrong odd that it may seem changing the green sensor worked.

Could you show me where these are? May pick a spare up from the scrappy tommorrow?

    Cheers

Right on your thermostat housing you`ll see a green plug and a blue plug you take off the metal clip & use 19mm deep socket to undo the sensors from the housing.

    Steve.
  13. #13
Ah so where the thermostat is at the back of the top hose? Will I need to drop the coolant to change em? And would an adjustavle spanner work I don't think I've got deep sockets that size
  14. #14
yes mate its at the back of the top hose, you won`t get a spanner in there all you`ll do is round off the nut. With the coolant leave the engine till its cold take the 1st sensor off then quickly screw the replacement in repeat for the 2nd sensor.A deep 19mm socket from Halfords won`t cost you much or borrow 1 from a mate.

Ah got ya mate, hopefully that will sort my problem.

    Thanks mate.

    intresting cheers

my saxo rises in temp when ive been driving around town and then get stuck in a jam but it seems to cool rapidly when out on a bypass. I think small engines dont really get given the best cooling systems as they are meant for short journeys. as long as the fan is able to cool it down then i cant see it being a problem. If its going anywhere near 3/4 though then there may be a problem. Fan kicks in just over half

hum fan kicks in at 3/4
