Vtr engine pinking!

  1. #1
My 2001 vtr engine pinks under acceleration, slight load. Motor has 81k on the clock, but im wondering why its pinking, surely the timing is all sorted via the ecu isnt it?. Any advice on how to cure this, gladly appreciated. Cheers!

light load pinking can be a light fuel dose. (with timing ok)

If you know a steady long hill climb _ I would bet you dont have much power, and will have to keep coming down the box - If this carries on you - will get poor cold starting, and eventually the management lamp will come on on the hill climbs.

The above on my missus Corsa was a slowly drifting MAF sensor 85quid.

Do you have a mass airflow meter on your car?

Many thanks muttonjeff. Yes it seems very lean....no soot at all in exhaust backbox!, and car does 45 to 50 mpg!, so it may be the sensor drifting out as you say. Not sure about whether its running a mass airflow meter or not but its a standard vtr motor on 81k with full service history.
Also sometimes the tickover searched up and down to correct itself.
