Mark 2 Catalytic converter / downpipe?

Is it easy to remove the cat / downpipe from the manifold of a mark two VTR (y reg)

Someone mentioned thats its easier to replace the whole manifold, cat and downpipe rather than just popping a new cat / downpipe on.

What if my manifolds in good nick though, and all i need really is the downpipe /cat doing. There about 80 quid new on ebay or obviously less from scrappy.

    Can anyone enlighten me ?

pretty easy to just get the cat off u just need a deep reach socket to get hold of the bolts connecting the cat to the manifold piece then the rest is easy just unplug lambda from car then with mine I put the lambda in a vice and turned the cat to get it out coz they can be quite stuck

Easy, 4x nuts on cat to manifold, bolt into gearbox housing and 2x bolts at centre section joint.

Dont even need a deep reach socket, did mine with standard socket and extension iirc. Remember to get a new gasket too.

imo just change the whole mk2 system to a mk1 decat system, alot easier and better to work with

why? what if the guy doesnt want to decat? to change to mk1 you have to swap the oil filter set up too. if he want to decat then surely a raceland 4-1 is a better option for improved flow over standard cast shite and its direct fit.

and how is it easier and better to work with? im intrigued about this phrase.

basically i havent got the money at the minute for a manifold and my down pipe, just where it has the flange on it. Thats where its going bad. Its not major at the minute but at the same time i want it sorted. Also my mot is next month so a de cat at the present would be pointless hassle. I might wack some paste around it for the time being untill i can afford to buy a new part.
