Important! : Misfiring on Idle, Struggling to start and Cutting out after Starting.

  1. #1
As title states. My T Reg GTi will sometimes start fine but will run lumpy. Sometimes it will turn over for about 5 seconds and then struggle to start and then cut out. Over a month it has properly misfired 3 times whilst idleing at a junction, rev's dropped to 300 then back up to rough idle at about 700/800, it is running very lumpy, car shakes very slightly on idle. Today after it cut out I had to leave it 5 minutes before it would start again.

So far i've changed the spark plugs, fuel filter, given it a full service, cleaned both the throttle body and the ICV and the problem is gradually getting worse. I decatted the car yesterday with a Pugsport and its only today it wouldn't start.

Is this a potential coilpack problem? Should I be looking at the Lamba sensor? What else should I be looking at?

    Thanks in Advance.

best thing you can do is get it pluged into a fault code reader or a machine.
it could be, coil pack, lamda senor, maybe inlet oxygen sensor, cam senor. if you know anyone that has the same car as you see if they will let you borrow there car to swap parts

The engine management light hasn't come on so surely there wouldn't be any codes to be read? My mate has a GTi and i'm stealing some parts on Sunday to see what it could be.

I don't have the right diagnostic tools to read my ECU, I need Lexia(?) and they go for £100 on ebay for stuff that. Am gonna steal some of my mates parts on Sunday and will report back.

Well it depends if your car is single plug or 3 plug.Mines a 3 plug so i can use the obd2 adapter which i found on ebay(ELM 327) for around 19 dollars and downloaded Torque app from android market to my phone which worked fine.

It's single plug so i believe i need a Lexia diagnostics tool.

I broke down yesterday. Hopefully this is my problem.

Did the AA just drop you at a garage?

Update on the situation, haven't got around to trying to fix the problem. However it did worsen a little bit, sometimes it would just turn over without firing, I then discovered this could be cured by priming the fuel pump a couple of times and it would start fine. Started it today and it sounds like its running on 3 cylinders, really rough and gases are coming out of the exhaust in half second bursts instead of constant.

So fuel pump or injector issue?
