Four pure black sooty spark plugs

  1. #1
Just wanted to narrow down my problem, car has run stupidly rich since day one of the engine going in, so whats down to it?

    - Lambda sensor
    - Faulty Ecu?

Any other alternatives? All four plugs are pure black the car has been running more and more like shit since the plugs are obviously covered in black shit, Cheers.

Sorry and i just thought of one more..

    - Coolant temp sensor?

Which i think is a fair possibility as i've read with other cars the exhaust tip gets very sooty like my pugsport if there's a faulty temp sensor?

What is your car like from cold? dodgy idle for the first minute or so?

What colour are the ends of the Lambda sensors?

Have to give it a rev recently on start up then idles rough, always has done mind you, i thought it was the icv but i cleaned that and the map sensor which is making me think it is the temp sensor, will a temp sensor off a rallye loom work on a gti loom?
  5. #5
    What plug make are they?
  6. #6
NGK BZ9R's or something along those lines..
  7. #7
And they've done about 50 miles, new fuel and oil filter and plugs, and some sooty plugs is the result, i'm thinkin temp sensor likes!
  8. #8
    Are they iridium plugs?
  9. #9
If the idle goes back to normal after a little while isn't it the sign of a dodgy lambda?

I thought if it was a temp sensor then the idle is normally abit all over the place.

The idles is up and down from 900-1100 and it always has been, must be the temp sensor, my sump level comes up on the dash but no oil pressure also, got a feeling i'll need to chop some sensors off my old loom.

Right so i just removed my coolant temp , green ecu display temp one and cleaned them both stuck them back in, cleaned the plugs put them and the coilpack back on, now the bloody cars fuel pump wont prime so it wont start to see if i have solved the mystery?
  12. #12
    reset the ecu.

test the cooland sensor output with a multimeter, think its 0-5v, obviously accross the range, when the temp comes up.

Yeah i disconnected the battery, the only thing i could think of was maybe a fuse blew, as when i had the spanner over the temp senser the other side hit the positive on the battery and sparked
  14. #14
i had idle problems so changed the temp sensor and worked fine

Alright guys left ecu and battery disconnected all night and still no sound from the fuel pump

Can anyone tell me where the fuse can be found to replace it so the fuel pump will prime again.
