Newbie, a few questions

  1. #1
Hey all, ive just bought an 02 VTR I know it needs a bit of work hence its going to the garage tomorrow luckily ive got a 6 month warranty on anything major that needs doing, but i just wanted a bit of advice as to what you think needs doing.

Car drives fine, looks like it has an aftermarket (wide) exhaust on it as well as a K&N filter under the hood it also looks like its been lowered. Now when i turn towards full lock right or left there's a god awful noise like something catching on plastic like a loud Click click click.

Thats the biggest problem, second is the fuses blowing on the indicators and stereo, changed them and they blow straight away.

third is the drivers seat which is jammed in mid postition, probably the runners so im not too worried about that. Its just the first thing.

    Any ideas?

    thanks

sorry to bump, can anyone help? I have searched the forums and cant see anything like that horrible noise, could that be the CV joints. If so does anyone know roughly how much im going to be paying out tomorrow Ill bet the previous owner was registered on these forums as it looks quite sporty lol

Its a black VTR 02 reg with vts wheels

again sorry to mither, just wondering how big the bill is going to be tomorrow as the warranty doesnt really cover wear and tear.

    thanks

Heres a picture, can you tell from this if it has been lowered ? im just wondering if this is anything todo with the noise?

If anything the noise could be the wheels catching the inner arch liners?
Check if it still has those and if there are any scratch/scrape marks?
Also, turn the wheel full lock, and have a look for anything that could rub?
  5. #5
I've turned the wheel full lock both ways and there's nothing catching on it.
  6. #6
    Hmmm
Those cv joints you pointed out then?
Done this test moving or parked up?
As in can you hear it moving or just parked?
  7. #7
when the engines off there's little noise but when your moving and turning that's when its the worst. Clicking and the car moves up and down.

could be a drop link hmmmm
does it make this sound over bumps and stuff?
bounce the front of the car, ( i always stand on the door sills when doors open bounce the car if you hear a knocking noise its a drop link)
if not could just be your cv joints
  9. #9
Thanks, I will go bounce the car tomorrow, neighbours will think I am crackers. I'm hoping its just the cv joints, I don't know a lot about cars and I've a feeling I'm going to get fleeced at the garage (being a girl) Its just the noise sounds so god awful I immediately thought it must be something really bad.

Forgot to add, it doesn't make any noise unless you start to turn the wheel towards full lock, I drove it home on the motorway and it was fine until I turned the car around in the cul-de-sac, felt like the tracking was a bit off though.

    UPDATE, WHAT AN IDIOT!

Feel like a right idiot for buying it, phoned up the dealer and hes just said tough shit basically.

    Heres whats gone :-

    left hand driveshaft gone
indicator electrics and stereo a mess
    clutch on way out
    catalytic convertor gone
bumper tied on with cable ties!!!
    back box hanging off

Could cry really, car came with 6 month warranty but i dont know if any of this is covered.
  14. #14
A few of them aint that bad tbh,
back box and bumper can be sorted out pretty easy,
the cat is an alright job as well tbh,
electrics well lol i had major electric problems last year and took me ages to find the problem,
clutch can be done for around £70
drive shafts well unsure as ive never had to have it done

What happened to the 6 month warranty as in the first post?

If the car came with warranty they should sort it out, if not kick off with them
  17. #17
lol fuck paying for all that when you just bought the car if its got 6 months warranty for mechanical parts they can at least do the clutch and driveshafts, when i first bought my vtr i took it back because the backbox fell off on the 1st day!
  18. #18
yeah if they soft the drive shafts, clutch out sounds ok i guess, even tho electrics are a pain in thr arse, the other 2 things can be sorted rather easy, didnt you test drive or look around the car before you bought it?
  19. #19
    Should be covered.

You get 3 months Warranty anyway if bought from a dealership. A mate of mine bought a civic from one and the rear trailing arm went. Rang up the dealership and said about it, they fixed it for free.
Go on the DirectGov site, and search on there about 3month warranties with dealership bought cars..

Should be some useful info on there.
All of it should be fixed by the dealer.

As per the 6 month warranty, ive just called them and they wont pay out as the faults were on the car when purchased. I bought the car from croft trade center in blackburn , its a huge place but he is saying because the car was a part exchange he doesnt have to make sure the vehicle is mechanically sound when selling it to me.

hes also signed on the warranty documents that I confirm the car is mechanically sound and of driving order. But he says that's what happens with part exchanges and he never has them checked out as it was sold as part ex to clear.

so now my cars in the garage, god knows how much its going to cost, I can write him a letter from Trading standards giving him 14 days to refund my money, but he basically said good luck with that as he says he told me what was wrong with the car.

I only knew that the car had cosmetic problems and nothing was said about mechanics.

Pissed off, I know I should have gotten the AA to check the car, but its easy to say that now!

take it back mate and say to him the car needs to be fixed. you then mention that under the fair trades act that if the car is not fit for pourpose at the time of purchase you have 3 months to return it and have it fixed to a standard that is sutable for road use (mot standard)

if he doesnt do anything about it give citizens advice a call they will be more than happy to help you and they know there shizzle.

I had the same problem with my civic's when i got that.

Unless he sold it to you as a trade sale, and it was stated it was sold as trade/at trade price with no warranty then he may be right.

But, he's talking from his ring. He's liable to fix it as its not fit for purpose.
Theres a form on the direct gov website somewhere about trading standards and the warranty you're supposed to get when buying from a dealer. Print it off, and take it too him. He'll soon fix it.

And if he doesnt trading standards will land him with a hefty fine and a good old arse raping.

Just print the form out and take it to him try to stay carm and dont get cocky about anything.

have a read of this and give them a call mate.

Surely thats what a warranty is for? Tbh if he quoted all that work to be done, id get it double checked anyway because he sounds like a douche.
  25. #25
    He is a Douche!

I've reported the company to trading standards and watchdog. I googled them and they seem to have a reputation for selling dangerous cars. Hindsight is a wonderful thing, im normally so careful I was just rushing because i needed a replacement car

Anyway good news is my dad is helping with the repairs and It should all be done by Saturday. Anything that goes after that will be covered in the warranty so i should be ok. I guess I've learnt a lesson today, doesn't make me feel any less of an idiot though!
  26. #26
Good luck sorting everything out, doesn't sound that bad. But that dealership seem like right twats!
On the positive, car looks nice

take it to the trading standards agency saying youve been ripped off or just look in the for sale section pic up all those parts cheap of people breaking their saxos
