CV Gaiter - Fitting

Hi Folks,

My Saxo 1.1I just failed its MOT the other day, one of the defects was a split gaiter, (offside front, outer). I've ordered a replacement gaiter kit (not the split type), can anyone advise me on how to fit this, can this be done in a matter of hours or is it advisible to just take it down to my local mechanic for fitting?, I would much prefer to do the work myself and save £ as i'm going to have to fork out for new brake pads and a few other repairs also.

tbh its cheaper and easier to get a garage to fit it for ya.
I say that because, its a messy and tricky task.
Chances are if you try and stretch the cv boot yourself and it splits, youre stuck.
If garage on the other hand split your boot as they do it, they will supply and fit one and not charge you for part. I split on average 2 out of 10 boots I do at work.

I bought one of those sets from Ebay that comes with everything you need including a cone to slide the boot over the cv joint.

Worked well although I used cable ties instead of the Steel Ties that came with it as I think they might need a proper tool.

Also cut about 2 inches of the end of the cone so wouldn't have to stretch the boot as much.

Cost £7 in all and took about 20 minutes.

I'd reccomend draining the Garbox oil and removing the driveshaft but I'm sure if your careful you could probably do it with the driveshaft in situ.

cv boots a pet hate of mine at work pal, as said above you get a cone and proper cv boot lube turn the cv boot inside out and cover the cone and the inside of boot with the lube and make sure you have a good grip and slide it on and DON'T STOP !!! will make things a whole lot harder, if your worried pull the shaft out of the box and use something like a rubber glove to stop the oil draining out and get the shaft in a vice and do as above.(i prefer doing this)

then the smaller end use a cable tie and on the bigger end us a jubliee clip (80mm i think) unless you have the proper tool to be able to use the supplied clips (depending on what clips) some just need the ends squashing in a vice.
