Important! : car got a life of it own

My 52 plate sax VTR started to steer its self to the right, thought maybe a sticy caliper, when i hit the brakes hard it stops in a straight line so cant be that. Recently the car has also started to wobble its steering wheel , even a low speeds.

Then tonight there was a humming noise coming from engine bay on the way home, which got louder and louder the closer to home I got. (7 miles 0ne way). Once home I decided to pop the bonnet to see where the humming was coming from, took a guess at been the PAS, so decided to rock steering while bonnet up to see if noise stopped or got louder, stayed the same, took a look unner the bonnet agsin and saw smoke from PAS.

Guess I need A new PAS?

Are the a straight forward swop, or are they a bastard of a job.

    Cheers Kris.

quite straigt foward 2 10mm bolts on power steering motor and just 1 10mm nut on bottle and just unclip wire and undo pipes and your done then do the reverse of that when putting a new one on mate

yep deffo an easy job maybe 20 mins, the later vtr's don't have the bottle bolted to the front panel (the resevoir is part of the pump itself) so its as j_s says but 1 less bolt, if there is smoke coming from the pas pump the electric motor is starting to sieze up, in a bit it will stop completely and you will have no power steering at all and u will need arms like a gorilla to drive the car m8

Whats the going rate for a PAS pump, new and used? Was thinking of getting a used one as car is due for the 1st mot since i got it last year and not sure how its gonna go.

Unless a new ones not to pricey, tried looking on Eurocarparts but not bringing up a price so will have phone when i get chance

i'd say something else has gone if its pulling to the side i would'nt have thought the pump would do that although that may be on the way out aswell
