Saxo VTR - Flapping/squealing when braking from passenger front wheel..

  1. #1
    Hi all,

Just registered here - hope someone can offer some constructive advice..

I've got a 51 plate VTR that was originally a Furio and had the works done last year to convert it to a VTR..

Most of the time when braking, particularly when it's hot or dry weather, the passenger front wheel will make a flapping, squealing sort of noise that seems to happen once for every revolution of the wheel.

After a few trips back and forth to my local mechanic (who knows his stuff), we've realised or fixed the following..
    • Pads and discs are in good condition as were brand new last year after the conversion to VTR
    • Tightened up a rod that links the brake to somewhere near the suspension spring (not sure of its' name)
    • Secured the hubcaps on my wheels which were slightly loose and wobbly.

Got to take the car back next week for further investigation but we're at a loss now - the only things that I can think of are - brake pads need copper greasing, something is caught in the brake pad, the caliper is sticking, or maybe a wheel bearing needs replacing?

Any thoughts or ideas welcomed and appreciated.

i have the same problem but on the drivers side of my mk2 VTR (2002) its definatly not a wheel bearing because i have just changed that a few weeks ago, and i also replaced my disks and pads several months ago, ive had the strut off obviously to smash the wheel bearing out and fit the new one and put every thing back in as it should so i think it must be the lack of copper grease on the pads, as i didnt put any on when i changed the pads. however it wasnt making the squeeky noise before the wheel bearing, or could it just be because ive had the caliper off? anyway i shall soon find out as its MOT on the 25th so see what the say down the garage!

To test the bearing, make sure the sterring wheel is locked, jack up the front wheels only enough to let them clear the ground. Use axle stands, then grab @ 3 and 9 oclock position try to push/pull the wheel at those positions and then do the same @ 12 and 6. If there is obvious movement then the bearings gone. Although!

I suspect the outer CV joint could be on its way out, again with the wheel in the air, rotate forward and look/listen for the clicking.

Wont be the pads needing copper grease as they would squeak, although are you sure that the retaining spring was replaced, as this secures the caliper.

Just re-read, could be that the wheel arch liner is loose

my squeeking noice is very very quiet and you can barely hear it when driving normally, its only under bracking it happens but also if i slam on the brakes hard it doesnt do it just when slowing down gently to junctions/roundabouts etc. the little spring clip things are on securely too.

mclovin9091 it is a squeeking/squeeling noise on and off as if its one squeek for every rotation of the wheel...

Rick, sounds like you have the exact same problem as me.. I'm taking it down to my garage later this week so I'll let you know what it is as soon as I know. McLovin - thanks for the ideas, I'll pass them on to my garage and see what he says. I think he checked the bearing first of all, he did the 9 + 6 o clock push and pull and didn't seem concerned.

I just can't see how it can be anything other than the brakes as it happens when braking - although I understand braking puts a lot of pressure on the other parts around the wheel.

yeah sounds like it, mine only happens when braking too, cheers mate.

May just be something as simply as there may be a lip of the discs and the pads are catching on one point.

    Any joy yet?

i had a play over the weekend and tried a few things but nothing, then i just thought ill try putting some grease on the back of the breakpads as i didnt have any copper slip/grease i know it will heat up and everntualy go everywhere but it seems to have stopped it. strange tho, because i have never greased them before and i changed the disks and pads a few months ago, its just when i took the caliper off to remove the strut to do the wheel bearing that it started squeeking when i put it back together. wierd. anyway, glad its sorted now, was really pissing me off! haha
